Virginia Tierney, 93, of Carroll, died Friday, April 25, 2014 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Schott. Music will be by Marcy Anderson and the St. Lawrence Choir with Sherry Loughran as cantor. Mass Server will be Zachary Henkenius. Lectors will be Vern Henkenius, Michael Henkenius, and Jim Pedelty. Gift Bearers will be her granddaughters: Sarah Muhlbauer, Mary Beth Wiskus, Jennifer Kervin, Maureen Tierney, Melissa Tierney, and Monica Henkenius. Eucharistic Ministers will be Vern Henkenius, Jim Pedelty, and Maria Shibita. Casket Bearers will be her grandsons: Michael Henkenius, Pat Henkenius, Dave Pedelty, Dan Tierney, Bob Muhlbauer, Todd Wiskus, and Sean Kervin. The St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary will form an honor guard for the funeral mass. Private family burial will be Tuesday in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 6 p.m. on Monday where there will be a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church at 9 a.m. on Tuesday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass.

Mary Virginia (Virginia) Heires, daughter of Frances Rose (Hopkins) and Arthur Francis Heires was born September 8, 1920 in Bloomfield, Nebraska. She attended St Andrew’s school through 9th grade and graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1937. After graduation she taught one year in a rural, one-room school with 16 pupils, spanning grades one through eight. The following year she enrolled in Duchesne College in Omaha, Nebraska, graduating in 1942. She worked at Federal Land Bank and Union Pacific Railroad until her marriage to Lieutenant James Michael Tierney, MD on July 26, 1943 in the Chapel of Our Lady of Nebraska within the Cathedral of Omaha.
With World War II underway, the couple moved first to Chicago while Dr. Tierney was stationed at the Great Likes Naval Training Station, then they were sent to Hastings, Nebraska, followed by San Francisco. Virginia returned to Omaha while her husband was at sea. After the War, the Tierneys lived in Baltimore, Maryland and Des Moines, Iowa while Dr. Tierney completed his Internal Medicine Residency. They moved to Carroll in January 1949 when Dr. Tierney joined the Carroll Medical Center.
Virginia was an avid reader and was active in the Clio Club, the St Anthony Hospital Auxiliary, the St Lawrence Guild, the Food Pantry, and a bridge group. She was a homemaker who was involved in the activities of her five children, including serving for many years as the leader of her children’s Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops.
She is survived by her daughter Mary Fran (Jim) Pedelty of Carroll; three sons James Michael (Mary Jo) of Centennial, Colorado; Thomas of Redmond, Washington; and Dr. Dennis (Judy) of Omaha, Nebraska; and a son-in-law Vern Henkenius of Carroll; eight grandchildren: Michael (Monica) Henkenius, Lincoln, NE; Patrick Henkenius, Urbandale, IA; Mary Beth (Todd) Wiskus, Des Moines, IA; Sarah (Bob) Muhlbauer, of Carroll, Dave Pedelty of Carroll; Jennifer (Sean) Kervin, Denver, CO; Daniel (Melissa) Tierney, Omaha, NE, Maureen Tierney, Omaha, NE; and 14 great grandchildren. Also surviving Mrs. Tierney are two brothers-in-law Raymond U. Tierney of Cheyenne, WY and Joseph P. Tierney of Parker, CO; and two nephews David (Katherine) Heires of Bronxville, NY and Gregory (Rosa) Heires of Montrose, NY.
Preceding Mrs. Tierney in death were her husband of 69 years Dr. Jim Tierney, their daughter Kathleen (Kathie) Henkenius, one brother John (Jack) Hopkins Heires and his wife Alice, a nephew John Heires, Jr., a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Tierney, and her parents.
