Steve Schaefer, 59 of Carroll, died early Tuesday morning, January 6, 2015 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 10, 2015 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Schott. Music will be by Kate Cuddy and the St. Lawrence Choir. Lectors for the funeral mass will be: Julie Podey, Kelley Johnson, and Liz Hartsock. Gift Bearers will be Steve’s grandchildren: Kenedy, Shelby, Destiny, Evan, Macy, and Ryder Schaefer. Eucharistic Ministers will be: Jane Schaefer and Allen and Diane Vonnahme. Casket Bearers will be: Gary Schaefer, Ken Schaefer, Corey Schaefer, David Schaefer, Gary Riesselman, Allen Vonnahme, and Jason Vonnahme. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 p.m. on Friday where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service at 6 p.m.
The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church at 9 a.m. on Saturday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass.

Born on May 17, 1955 at Carroll, Iowa, Steven Dale Schaefer was the son of John “Jack” and Florence (Galloway) Schaefer. He spent his younger years in the Breda area, attended St. Bernard’s School and Audubon Schools for a brief time before graduating from Carroll High School with the Class of 1974. Following his schooling, Steve was employed in the meat department at Fareway Foods.
On May 6, 1978 he was united in marriage to Marilyn Ocken at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll. The couple made their home in Carroll and Steve was employed at Pack and Save for many years before going to work for Farner Bocken Co., where he was currently employed.
In his spare time, Steve enjoyed walking, relaxing, listening to 70’s music, taking drives, especially around Swan Lake. He always enjoyed the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Steve is survived by his wife Marilyn of Carroll; sons: Brian Schaefer and his wife Holly and their children, Kenedy, Shelby, and Destiny, all of Carroll, and Adam Schaefer and his wife Carri and their children, Evan, Macy, and Ryder, all of Carroll; his siblings: David Schaefer of Carroll, Gary (Jane) Schaefer of Carroll, Kenneth Schaefer and friend Becki Miller of Carroll, Linda Schaefer of Carroll, Janice Schaefer of Carroll, Lori (Dave) Hill of North Liberty, and Amy (Mitch) Rydl of Carroll; his mother-in-law, Rose Ocken of Carroll; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Diane (Allen) Vonnahme of Arcadia, and Jolene (Gary) Riesselman of Halbur; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended relatives and many friends.
His parents and his father-in-law, Wilfred Ocken preceded him in death.
