He attended grade school in New Sharon and Muscatine later graduating from Mason City High School with the Class of 1973. Scott then attended NIACC before being employed at Pepsi and Hardees. While employed at Hardees he was transferred to Carroll where he also worked at Ike Auen Distributing and Reicks Construction. For the past 18 years Scott was working at Farner-Bocken where he was currently the Safety Director.
A sports enthusiast, Scott’s favorite teams where the Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers, Carroll Tigers, and the St. Louis Cardinals, always enjoying his trips to Busch Stadium. He also enjoyed walking on the trails in Carroll, working out, collecting Firefighter memorabilia, and for several years coaching Recreational League Soccer. Scott was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carroll where often times he was a greeter for Sunday service.
Besides his children and his family, Scott’s greatest joy was being a dedicated member of the Carroll Fire Department. Scott joined the Carroll Volunteer Fire Department on April 6, 1980 and was assigned the Firefighter number of 17. He served with a great deal of pride and dedication to the department and was well respected by his fellow firefighters for his knowledge and ability to handle difficult situations throughout his career with the department. Scott always possessed the resilience and determination to recover from whatever setbacks life placed in front of him. His last challenge, cancer, was just too much for him to overcome, although he did the best he could in his fight for life.
Scott served many years at Lieutenant for the department in addition to serving on the training committee, the fire prevention committee and the fire prevention poster contest committee for school children. He always volunteered to help in nearly all extra community service activities that the department was called upon to do. In his latest duty, Scott took on the role of accountability safety attendant, making sure all firefighters were accounted for during firefighting and rescue operations. Scott’s experience, dedication, and camaraderie will be truly missed by all of his Fire Department Family.
Scott will be forever remembered by his companion Deb Loew of Carroll; his children: Jason Knowler and his wife Tara and their children Tanner and Levi of Neosho, MO, Michael Knowler and fiancé Brynn Nealon of Glendale, AZ, and Kelsie Knowler of Des Moines, IA; his father Kenneth Knowler of Ankeny; his brothers: Brad (Judy) Knowler of Peosta, IA, Dana (Jill) Knowler of Altoona, and Kelly (Joelle) Knowler of Altoona; as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, other extended relatives, his fellow firefighter family, and many friends.
