Robert Wieland, 88 of Carroll, died Friday, April 13, 2012 at Regency Park Nursing Home in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2012 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Schott. Homilist will be Fr. Robert Gralapp. Con-Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Johnson. Music will be by Marcy Anderson and the St. Lawrence Choir with Sherry Loughran as song leader. Mass Servers will be Grant Sanders and Max and Haley Heithoff. Lector for the funeral mass will be Jack Thein. Gift Bearers will be Paul and Sharon Vogel and Judy and Clarence Ziegmann. Honorary Casket Bearers will be members of the Carroll Fire Department and the Staff at Regency Park Nursing Home. Casket Bearers will be: Daryl Loew, Mike Mosher, Jerry Schrad, Steve Von Dielingen, Andy Vogel, and Emmett Lahr. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 on Sunday where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m. by the Breda Catholic Order of Foresters and a Christian Wake Service by St. Lawrence Parish at 6 p.m. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church at noon on Monday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass. Born on December 4, 1923 at Carroll, Iowa, Robert C. was the son of George and Laura (Heires) Wieland. He spent his entire lifetime in the Carroll Community and attended St. Lawrence Grade School and later graduated from Carroll High School with the Class of 1941. On September 10, 1945 he married Evelyn Wess at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. Bob served in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed at Camp Polk, Louisiana and later at Fort Ord, California. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Carroll and began his 41 year career with Peterson-Biddick Company. He was a seed manager for the company and belonged to the Iowa Seed Dealers Association, where he served on the Board of Directors for 3 years. Bob enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking, and had a love for flowers. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Bob served on the Carroll Fire Department for 25 years and was Fire Chief from 1970-1975. He was a member of the Iowa Fireman’s Association, Carroll Fire Department, Breda Catholic Order of Foresters, Carroll American Legion, Maurice Dunn Post # 7 and St. Lawrence Parish in Carroll.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Evelyn Wieland of Carroll; his children: Barbara Hamblen and her husband Phil of Denison, George Wieland and his wife Barbara of Carroll, Kathy Wieland of Carroll, and Mary Jo Wieland of Carroll; 7 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Marie Eich of Ackley; as well as many nieces, nephews and many friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Marguerite Madigan, Dorothy Madigan, and Bea Wess; and his brothers: Art, Norbert, Harold, and Ed Wieland.
