Robert A. Maystadt, age 89, of Carroll, died early Tuesday morning, November 30, 2010 at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 3, 2010 at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Schott. Lector will be Jim Van Dyke. Gift Bearers will be Sue Van Dyke and Mary White. Eucharistic Ministers will be Urban and Jean Knobbe and Marilyn Foley. Casket Bearers will be Jim Van Dyke, Thomas Van Dyke, Tony Van Dyke, R.J. Van Dyke, Lloyd Schachtner, and Alan Schapman. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Arcadia American Legion.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 p.m., Thursday where there will be a rosary prayed at 4 p.m., followed by a Christian Wake Service by St. Lawrence Parish at 7 p.m. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or the church for the Fr. Kuemper Society.
Robert August Maystadt was born on November 23, 1921, at Mt. Moses in Carroll, Iowa, the son of Anton and Kathryn (Hunstock) Maystadt. He attended St. Lawrence School through 8th grade. Robert then began working various construction jobs before being inducted into the United States Army in November of 1942. He served in WW II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and received the bronze battle star. Robert was honorably discharged in November of 1945. Robert was married to Verna Schachtner on May 11, 1957 at Our Lady of Good Council Church in Fonda, Iowa. Robert and Verna celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in May of 2007. He worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 35 years, retiring in 1981. He enjoyed traveling, socializing, playing cards, and just going out for leisurely drives. Robert was a member of St. Lawrence Parish in Carroll, and the Arcadia American Legion, Ehlers-Gerken Post #694.
Survivors include one sister; Joan Schapman of Carroll; brothers in law and sisters in law: Walter Schachtner of Belvedere, IL, Myrtle Schachtner of Fonda, Ruth and Eugene Madden of Fayette, IA, Mary Dee Schachtner of Fonda, and Lloyd and Marian Schachtner of Ft. Dodge; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Verna in January 2008; two sisters: Lillian Bernholtz and Dorothy Schleisman; and one brother in infancy, Kenneth Maystadt.
