Neil Polking, 83 of Breda, died Wednesday evening, April 30, 2014 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2014 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Breda. The Celebrant will be Fr. Gary Snyder. Music will be by Marilyn Hundling and the St. Bernard’s Choir. Soloists for the funeral mass will be: Rhonda Derby, Jill Fitzgerald, Sara Canady and Abby Heim. Lector for the funeral mass will be Marlene Goecke. Gift Bearers will be Marilyn Eischeid and Diane Rosteck. Eucharistic Minister will be Bev Bruning. Casket Bearers will be: Kevin Eischeid, Doug Eischeid, Jim Eischeid, Ken Eischeid, Frank Eischeid, and Dean Bruning. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with military honors conducted by the Breda American Legion. The Breda Catholic Order of Foresters will form an honor guard for the funeral mass.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda after 2:30 p.m. on Sunday where there will be a rosary at 3 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service at 5 p.m.

Neil F. Polking was born on October 30, 1930 at Carroll, Iowa the son of Art and Alvina (Wessling) Polking. He spent his entire lifetime in the Breda Community and was a graduate of St. Bernard’s High School. Following his formal education Neil served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and after his honorable discharge returned to Breda.
On August 22, 1953 he was united in marriage to Marlys Goecke at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Breda. Neil was employed at Breda Oil and later went to work for Carroll County where he worked in the roads and maintenance department and drove a maintainer in the Breda area.
Neil was an avid baseball fan playing for a farm league team in his younger years, coaching Little League and also announcing for baseball games. He enjoyed horseshoes, bowling, gardening and loved fishing. He was a 60 year member of the Breda American Legion, member of St. Bernard’s Parish and St. Bernard’s Parish Choir.
Survivors include his children: Russ Polking and wife Ann of Newton, Carol Heim and husband Joe of Cedar Rapids, and Rhonda Derby and husband John of Ralston, NE; 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; his sisters: Marilyn Eischeid of Halbur and Diane (John) Rosteck of Cedar Rapids; his in-laws: Delores Kanne of Carroll, Madonna Koster of Breda, Marinell (Warren) Garnatz of LaVista, NE, and Marlene Goecke of Remsen; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended relatives and many friends.
Neil was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Marlys in April of 2009.
