Mary Heider, age 87, of Carroll, Iowa, died Thursday, August 20, 2009, at her residence following a brief illness. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 A.M., Monday, August 24, 2009, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Schott. Lectors will be a son, Patrick Heider and grandson, Mark Danielson, Jr. Gift Bearers will be granddaughters, Amy Hermanson and Jennifer Baglio. Eucharistic Ministers will be Marilyn Foley and Urban and Jean Knobbe. Casket Bearers will be grandsons, Mark Danielson, Jr., Eric Heider, John Prendergast, Mike Prendergast, Matt Prendergast, Jeff Prendergast, and Pat Prendergast. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. Sunday. A rosary will be prayed at 4 P.M. Sunday. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Sunday by St. Lawrence Parish. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or church for the Kuemper Catholic Schools Foundation. Mrs. Heider was born on December 22, 1921, at Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the daughter of James F. and Pauline (Kageman) Duncan. Her family moved to Carroll in 1936 and she graduated from St. Angela Academy in 1939. She then attended the McKennan Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and graduated in 1942 as a Registered Nurse. On June 6, 1945, she was married to John J. Heider at St. Joseph Church in Carroll with Msgr. P.T. Lynch officiating. The couple made their home in Carroll and Mary was a homemaker and raised their family and later worked as a nurse at St. Anthony Nursing Home from 1969 to 1985. She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish and Parish Ladies Guild. Mary enjoyed her family, walking, playing bridge, and playing golf. Survivors include her husband, John Heider of Carroll; her children, Michael Heider of Carroll, Mary Gerken and her husband John of Shakopee, Minn., John Heider and his wife Susan of Charlotte, North Carolina, Susan Prendergast and her husband Tom of Rochester, Minn., Thomas Heider and his wife Helen of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Barbara Danielson and her husband Mark of Richardson, Texas, Stephen Heider and his wife Michelle of North Barrington, Illinois, Patrick Heider and his wife Susan of St. Louis, Missouri, and Nancy Feste and her husband Scott of Naperville, Illinois; twenty-two grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and two brothers-in-law, Donald Happe of Sioux City and Jack Samuels of Oak Ridge, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Alyce Happe.
