Margaret was born on February 24, 1922 in Willey, the daughter of George and Catherine (Zitzlsperger) Bayer. She grew up in Willey and attended St. Mary’s School. Margaret later graduated from St. Angela Academy in Carroll. Following graduation, Margaret worked in an accounting office for a few years before starting a career at the Carroll County Courthouse. After 20 years at the courthouse, she began to work for Carroll County State Bank followed by working the books in the office at St. Lawrence Church. Both jobs she held for almost 20 years each.
Margaret enjoyed shopping, jewelry, and going out to eat. She loved spending time with her sister Alice; the two could often be found together at casinos. They loved to visit local area casinos, but once traveled to places like Las Vegas, California, and to the east coast to try their luck at casinos. Margaret was a longtime member of St. Lawrence Church. She was a 70-year member of the St. Rose of Lima #6 Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
Following the death of her sister Alice in November of 2020, Margaret’s health began to decline. Margaret died on May 31, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister in infancy, and her sister Alice.
She is survived by her cousin Marion Long of Carroll; several other cousins from Texas and Algona, Iowa; nephew Al (Julie) Schroeder of Coon Rapids; and her gambling buddies.
