Lorraine Gehling, 88 of Carroll, died Saturday, January 23, 2016 at the Gehling family farm south of Carroll, surrounded by her family.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Johnson. Music will be by Barb McDermott and the Holy Spirit Choir. Lector for the funeral mass will be Sister Joann Gehling, F.S.P.A. Gift Bearers will be: Ryan Hart, Brad Hart, Alyssa Willenborg, Bryant Gehling and Chad Gehling. Eucharistic Ministers will be: Mary Jo Berning, Margene Heisterkamp, and Diane Vonnahme. Honorary Casket Bearers will be: Alyssa Willenborg, Melissa Hart, Megan Gehling, Alli Lynch, Julie Brown, Sue Norgaard, Doug Happe, Diane Halbur and Cindy Duhrkopf. Casket Bearers will be: Ryan Hart, Brad Hart, Bryant Gehling, Chad Gehling, Dennis Hoffman and Matt Willenborg. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 4:30 p.m. on Monday where there will be a rosary at 5 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 p.m. The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass.

Born on November 20, 1927 at Carroll, Iowa, Lorraine Margaret was the daughter of Leo and Frances (Jasper) Berning. She spent her younger years in Breda and later graduated from St. Bernard’s High School.
On November 22, 1952, Lorraine was united in marriage to Edward Gehling at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Breda. Ed and Lorraine made their home southwest of Carroll until 1959 when they moved to the Gehling family farm south of Carroll. Lorraine was a devoted housewife, assisting with their farm operation and raising their family.
Throughout her working career she was employed at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Carroll, assisted with the lunch program at Dedham-Willey Schools, and also did seasonal work at Garst-Thomas in Coon Rapids.
Lorraine enjoyed sewing, crocheting, cooking, baking, and always loved taking the guys meals while they were working in the field. Over the years, Ed and Lorraine looked forward to their neighborhood card club. In 1997, Ed and Lorraine moved to Carroll. Lorraine volunteered with New Hope, RSVP, assisted with Bingo at the nursing home and cleaned at Holy Spirit Church. Lorraine’s greatest joy was spending time with her entire family especially her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.
Lorraine was a member of Holy Spirit Church in Carroll and formerly a member of St. Mary’s Church in Willey.
Lorraine is survived by: her children: Jan Gehling of Carroll, Matt Gehling and his fiancé Julie Brown of Carroll, and Jean Gehling of Essex; her grandchildren: Ryan (Melissa) Hart, Brad Hart, Alyssa (Matt) Willenborg, Bryant (Megan) Gehling, and Chad Gehling; her great-grandchildren: Collin Willenborg, Kaleb Gehling, Brianna Willenborg, and Nile Hart; her siblings: Rita (Merlin) Wuebker of Milford, Clarence Berning of Carroll, Lois Hoffman of Coon Rapids, and Leo “Pete” (Mary) Jo Berning of Arcadia; her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Rita Anstoeter of Omaha, Rose Ocken of Carroll, Bob (JoAnn) Gehling of Carroll, Sister Joann Gehling, F.S.P.A. of Hiawatha, Jerry (Kathy) Gehling of Phoenix, AZ, Bonnie Rasmussen of Newton, Linda Gehling of Carroll, and Delores Nagl of Carroll; as well as other extended relatives and many friends.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Edward in 2012; her son Joseph in infancy; her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Sally Berning, Alfred Hoffman, Louis Anstoeter, Norma (Ed) Rasmussen, Carl Gehling, Louise (Walter) Schmitz, Wilfred Ocken, George (Lillian) Gehling, Vernon Gehling, and James Gehling.
