Lois Jean Miller, age 81, of Norwalk, Iowa, and formerly of Carroll, Iowa, died Monday, April 27, 2009, at Regency Care Center in Norwalk. Funeral Services will be held at 10 A.M., Saturday, May 2, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church in Carroll. The Reverend Ken Ferguson will officiate. The casket will be taken to the church at 8:30 A.M. Saturday to lie in state until the time of the funeral service. Organist will be Ellen Severin. Soloist will be Tammie McKenzie. Honorary Pallbearers will be Kenny Rosenow and Lewis Pierson III. Casket Bearers will be Dustin Miller, Jeffrey S. Miller, Cory Miller, Michael Carlisle III, Chris Lawrence, and Mitchell Simonson. Burial will be at the Carroll City Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll beginning at 5 P.M. on Friday. Jean Miller was born on December 6, 1927, at Scranton, Iowa, the daughter of Lewis H. and Nettie A. (Colbert) Pierson. She graduated from Carroll High School in 1945 and then moved to Washington D.C. where she was employed by the U.S. Department of the Navy. She was united in marriage to Foster C. Miller in West Virginia and then returned to Carroll to raise her five children. Mrs. Miller was employed by the Crouse Cartage Company and was owner of Miller Real Estate Company for many years. She received Associate Degrees in Environmental Conservation and Business Administration from Des Moines Area Community College and a Bachelor of Science Degree in English from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. At the age of fifty she pursued a Private Pilot Flying License and achieved her goal in 1977. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Chicago Teamsters Union, National Women’s Political Caucus, the governing body of the Crouse Employee Credit Union, and Board of Directors of the Mitchellville Training School for Girls. Following retirement Mrs. Miller joined the U.S. Peace Corps and spent time in Costa Rica and Budapest, Hungary. In 1998 she was named Woman of the Year of the American Biographical Institute of the United States. Survivors include her children and their spouses, Chuck and Pauline Miller of Des Moines, Jeffrey Miller and Jane Olberding of Kanawha, Scott and Julie Miller of Norwalk, Terry Miller of Abilene, Kansas, and Cherie and Michael Carlisle of Abilene, Kansas; ten grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and a brother, Lewis Pierson Jr. of Jefferson. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Myrtle Kendall.
