Leona Schroeder, age 97, of Carroll, Iowa, died early Friday morning, December 10, 2010, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Monday, December 13, 2010 at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Boekelman. Mass Servers will be Great-Grandsons, Brandon Walls and Alec Walls. Lector will be Dennis Schuessler. Gift Bearers will be Great-Grandchildren: Hank Schroeder, Zach Eldridge, Alex Stamback, Abby Stamback, Declan Schuessler, and Jason Lynch. Casket Bearers will be Grandchildren: Carolyn Danner-Walls, Faith Tryon-Willis, Patty Danner-Urban, Jackie Danner-Schuessler, Sue Schroeder-Eldridge, Allen Schroeder, Paul Tryon, and Deb Schroeder-Stamback. Burial will be at 3 p.m., Monday at St. Bernard Cemetery in Breda.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 4 p.m., Sunday where there will be a rosary prayed at 5 p.m.
Born on October 21, 1913, at Mt. Carmel, Iowa, Leona was the daughter of John and Helen (Baumhover) Huegerich. She spent her younger years in the Mt. Carmel Community and attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, later attending St. Angela Academy in Carroll. Following her formal education, Leona did domestic work for various families in the area. Leona was married to Julius Schroeder on November 26, 1935 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel by Fr. Simon Peter Roth. The couple made their home southeast of Breda until 1974 when they moved to the Carroll community. Throughout her lifetime Leona enjoyed gardening, baking, quilting, scrapbooking, and most of all spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She also volunteered from time to time at the New Hope Village Store in Carroll. In October of 2008 Leona’s family honored her with a party to celebrate her 95th birthday. Leona was a member of the Holy Spirit Parish, Parish Ladies Guild, and the Holy Spirit Quilters.
Survivors include; two daughters: Lu Tryon and her husband Reg of Salina, KS, and Cathy Danner and her husband Harold of Carroll; 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents; husband Julius Schroeder in December, 1986; a son, Alfred “Fritz” Schroeder; daughter in-law, Phyllis Schoeder; a grandson, Danny Schroeder; six sisters: Martha Schirck, Grace Pawlezki, Emma Nieland, Clara Beyerink, Dorothy Stephenson, and Alvina Schoeppner; a brother, Joseph Huegerich, and one brother in infancy.
