Leon B. “Lee” Hermsen, age 86, of Mt. Carmel, died, Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at St. Anthony’s Regional Hospital in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 15, 2008 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Mt. Carmel. The Celebrant will be Father Joe Dillinger. The lector will be Paul Grote. Gift Bearers will be Nancy Baumhover and John Hermsen. Casket Bearers will be Marvin Glass, Jason Clausen, Ray Huegerich, Tom Nees, Marvin Huegerich, and Tom Irlbeck. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 2:30 p.m. Sunday where there will be a rosary prayed at 3:00 p.m., followed by a Christian Wake Service at 6:00 p.m., by the parish. Leon Hermsen was born on December 12, 1921 at Mt. Carmel, Iowa, a son of John H. and Theresa (Ortner) Hermsen. Lee grew up in Mt. Carmel and attended school there through the 11th grade. He graduated from St. Bernard’s High School in Breda. Following his schooling Lee began farming near Mt. Carmel. For his entire life Lee was a grain and livestock farmer in the Mt. Carmel area until his retirement. Lee enjoyed baseball, golfing, fishing, hunting, trapping, bowling and playing the organ. Lee often was a host to the patrons of Mt. Carmel for coffee and socializing in the old Fleskes store. Lee was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Mt. Carmel. Survivors include, one brother, Edmund (Mary) Hermsen of Cudahy, Wisconsin; one sister, Joan (Wilbur) Baumhover of Fonda; 11 nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends. Leon was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Urban, Joseph, Walter, and Paul Hermsen; two sisters, Helen Mulligan and Catherine Hermsen.
