Laura, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Ganskow) Schieffer, was born on September 26, 1928, in Elgin, Nebraska. As a young girl, she moved with her family to the Carroll area. On February 28, 1949, Laura was united in marriage to Clarence “Butch” Humlicek at St. Peter and Paul Church in Carroll. The couple made their home in Carroll, where Laura was a devoted mother to their children and assisted Butch with bookkeeping for his upholstery business. Following Butch’s passing in 2007, Laura continued living in their home until becoming a resident of Regency Park Nursing & Rehab in 2023.
Laura was a member of St. Lawrence Church. Throughout her life, she enjoyed sewing, playing cards, watching Wheel of Fortune, roller skating, visiting the casino, grilling, camping and fishing at Lake View, reading her Bible, and spending time with her cats. Laura was young at heart – often staying up late to join in the fun with her children or quietly mopping the floor and humming after everyone had gone to bed.
Laura is survived by four sons: Michael Humlicek and wife Caroline of Carroll; Clarence “Butch” Humlicek Jr. and wife Vicki of Carroll; Timothy Humlicek and wife Lynda of Ames; and Thomas Humlicek and wife Gina of Kaiser, Missouri; her daughter Diane (Humlicek) Badding and husband Nick of Carroll; her grandchildren: Christopher Humlicek, Chad Humlicek, Angela Arenas, Adam Humlicek, David Humlicek, Tammy Humlicek, Katie Mengwasser, Jimmy Humlicek, Katlyn Humlicek, Mathew Humlicek, Mittchel Humlicek, Nathan Badding, Stephen Badding, Justin Badding, Tyler Badding, and 22 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Richard Sr. and Elizabeth (Ganskow) Schieffer; her husband Clarence “Butch” Humlicek Sr.; sons Kenneth Humlicek and David Humlicek, who died in infancy; a grandson, John Humlicek; one brother, Richard Schieffer Jr; and one sister, Betty (Schieffer) Danner.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Regency Park Nursing & Rehab for the warm and loving care provided during Laura’s final years. Their dedication and compassion will be forever remembered.
