Kathleen Skalla, age 80, of Carroll, Iowa, died early Thursday morning, September 16, 2010 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 A.M., Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Schott. Con-Celebrants will Father Lawrence McCarty, Father Doug Dandurand, Father Daniel Guenther, and Father Richard Adam. Lector will be Karen Wood. Gift Bearers will be Leo and Joleen Kasparbauer. Casket Bearers will be Greg Kasparbauer, Joe Espenhover, Mike Loehr, Randy Miller, Jerry Tegels, Tim Tegels, Judy Tiefenthaler, Michelle Gusafson and Jim Riesberg. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery at Maple River.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 p.m. Monday. There will be a rosary prayed at 4 p.m., followed by a Christian Wake Service by St. Lawrence Parish at 7 p.m. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or the church in Kathleen’s name.
Kathleen was born on August 19, 1930 at Ulmer, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Clara (Julich) Tegels. She spent her childhood in Maple River and attended St. Francis Elementary School before graduating from St. Angela Academy in 1948. On September 19, 1951 Kathleen was married to Donald Skalla at St. Francis Chuch in Maple River, Iowa by Father Peter M. Mattes. The couple later separated. Kathleen lived in the Scranton area until 1981 when she moved to Carroll. She was employed at the St. Lawrence Parish Rectory and also with the hot lunch programs at St. Lawrence School and Kuemper High School, until her retirement. Kathleen enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading, crossword puzzles, watching the birds, and spending time with her family. She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, and the Parish Ladies Guild.
Survivors include her children: Cheryl Kellen of Sioux City, IA, Terri Curry and her husband Kevin of Elk Point, SD, and John Skalla and his wife Terri of Sartell, MN; nine grandchildren; one great granddaughter; a sister, Clarice Loehr of Carroll, IA; sisters and brothers in law: Anita Tegels of Carroll, IA, and Donald Riesberg and his wife Darlene of Halbur, IA, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers: Leo, Fred, Joe and Jim Tegels; five sisters: Jewell Miller, Rose Mary Alexander, Joan Imming, Helen Tegels, and Lillian Riesberg.
