Kathleen Henkenius, age 65, of Carroll, Iowa, died Wednesday, October 20, 2010, at her residence following a long illness.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 P.M., Sunday, October 24, 2010, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Schott. Lectors will be her sons, Michael Henkenius and Patrick Henkenius. Gift Bearers will be her daughter, Mary Beth Wiskus, daughter-in-law, Monica Henkenius, and her grandchildren. Mass Servers will be Brian Ricke, Jared Henkenius, and Audrey Henkenius. Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist will be Jerome Henkenius. Honorary Pallbearers will be Kathy Irlbeck, Evie Wieland, Lois Zimmerman, Dorothy Pudenz, Mary Summers, Elaine Corsbie, and her sisters of Alpha Lambda Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Casket Bearers will be James Tierney, Jr., Thomas Tierney, Dr. Dennis Tierney, Jim Pedelty, Richard Henkenius, Dennis Henkenius, and Bill Henkenius. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 5 P.M. Saturday. There will be a Christian wake service at 7:30 P.M. Saturday by St. Lawrence Parish. Visitation will resume at 10 A.M. Sunday at the Sharp Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be left at the funeral home or church for the Kuemper Catholic Schools Foundation or the Diocese of Sioux City Religious Vocations Fund.
Kathie was born on March 17, 1945, at Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Dr. James and M. Virginia (Heires) Tierney. She attended St. Lawrence School in Carroll, graduated from Kuemper High School in 1963, and graduated from Duchesne College of the Sacred Heart in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1967. Kathie and Vern Henkenius were married on December 27, 1967, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The couple made their home in Carroll and from 1974 to 1979 lived at Dallas Center, from 1979 to 1980 lived at Odebolt, and in 1980 returned to Carroll to make their home. Kathie taught at St. Lawrence School in Carroll from 1967 to 1969 and then dedicated her life to being a homemaker and raising her family. She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, serving her parish as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, and treasured her many years as a C.C.D. teacher. She was also a member of Alpha Lambda Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the Carroll Area Serra Club. Kathie dearly loved her family, and enjoyed playing bridge, family activities, going to the Adoration Chapel, and attending Daily Mass.
Kathie is survived by her husband, Vern Henkenius of Carroll; her children, Michael Henkenius and wife Monica of Lincoln, Nebr., Patrick Henkenius of Urbandale, and Mary Beth Wiskus and husband Todd of West Des Moines; her grandchildren, Zachary, Andrew, Sally, and Gregory Henkenius, and Matthew Wiskus; her parents, Dr. James and Virginia Tierney of Carroll; a sister, Mary Fran Pedelty and husband Jim of Carroll; brothers, James Tierney Jr. and wife Mary Jo of Centennial, Colo., Thomas Tierney of Seattle, Wash., and Dr. Dennis Tierney and wife Judy of Omaha, Nebr.; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jerome and Norma Henkenius of Arcadia, Gordon Wiebers of Denison, Jan Werts of Fountain Valley, Calif., Richard and Cheryl Henkenius of Omaha, Nebr., Jean and Mark Elliott of St. Louis, Missouri, Dennis and Cathy Henkenius of Omaha, Nebr., and Bill and Cheryl Henkenius of Urbandale.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Arthur and Frances Heires and Ray and Mabel Tierney; her parents-in-law, Louis and Louise Henkenius; and a sister-in-law, Marlene Wiebers.
