Josephine Montefering, age 95, of Auburn, Iowa, died Wednesday evening, January 6, 2010, at the Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, January 12, 2010, at St. Mary Church in Auburn. The Celebrant will be Father Lynn Bruch. Con-celebrant will be Father Lawrence McCarty. The casket will be taken to the church at 9 A.M. Tuesday to lie in state until the time of the funeral mass. Lector will be Randy Nieland. Gift Bearers will be Tina Snyder and Sharon Eccles. Casket Bearers will be Joseph Smith, Jim Smith, Charles Hoff, John Smith, Allen Hoff, and Dennis Polries. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Auburn.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 5 P.M. Monday. There will be a Christian wake service at 6:30 P.M. Monday by St. Mary Parish.
Mrs. Montefering was born on December 17, 1914, at Parkston, South Dakota, the daughter of Joseph Peter and Catherine (Frytza) Smith. She spent her younger years in the Parkston area and received her formal education in Parkston. On June 21, 1938, she was married to Vernon Montefering at Parkston. In 1940 the couple moved to the Auburn community and in 1957 moved to the farm two miles south of Auburn. In recent years Mrs. Montefering made her home in Auburn. She was a member of St. Mary Parish, Parish Altar Society, and was a R.S.V.P. volunteer. Josephine enjoyed hand quilting, gardening, playing cards, baking, snowmobiling, and dancing.
Survivors include her daughter, Joleen Broich and her husband Steve of Corvallis, Oregon; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two sisters, Loretta Brech of Parkston, South Dakota and Rita Hoff of Tripp, South Dakota; a special niece, Evelyn Whitcher of Des Moines; and many other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Montefering, in November 1987; a son, Robert Montefering; one grandson; her parents; brothers, George and Edward Smith; and sisters, Florence Gau and Hildegard Polries.
