John Cook, age 83, of Carroll, died Monday, December 26, 2022 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Per John’s wishes no services will be held. Burial will be at a later date in St. Jospeh’s Cemetery in Dedham, Iowa.
John B. Cook, son of H.E. and Ruth E. Cook was born in Eastern Iowa in 1939 and raised in Des Moines. In his youth, he enjoyed playing with Chemistry sets and was active in scouting. He achieved the title of Eagle Scout studying ornithology, which became a life long love. He conducted several bird counts for the states of IA and FL.
John moved to Minneapolis to work at the King Pig Company to support his education at the University of Minnesota. After earning a Ph.D. in Science Education, John taught there, where he developed innovative methods for teaching Chemistry that benefited nursing students. While living in Minneapolis, John married his next-door-neighbor; Marcella (Marcy) Axman of Dedham, IA and they had a son, David.
He left Minneapolis for warmer climates and taught Science Education at Jacksonville University in Florida. After many years, John returned to IA and taught high school Chemistry in Martensdale and Albert City. John then moved to Marshalltown where he provided resources for Math and Science teachers at AEA 6 for 25 years. While in Marshalltown, John taught summer courses in Math and Science Education that provided credits for Masters degrees at state universities in Iowa. After he retired from AEA 6, he spent the final years of his career teaching Science Education at Grandview College.
John is survived by his wife, Marcy of Carroll, IA, his son, Dr. David (Stephanie) Cook, and his grandson, Alexander, of San Ramon, CA. John was preceded in death by his parents, older brother and sister, Lt. Col. Bud Cook and Alice Burkhart, several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, his parents-in-law, William and Lena Axman, sister-in-laws, and brother-in-laws.
