Born on March 6, 1941, Jerry was the son of Albert and Ann (Schenkelberg) Mescher. Jerry spent his life on the family farm near Halbur. He attended St. Augustine Grade School and Kuemper Catholic High School. Jerry had aspirations to attend college for aeronautical engineering. He needed to be a part of an organization that recognized and supported college-bound students. That is why Halbur U was so important to him. However, he knew it was important to his family that he continue the family tradition of farming.

Jerry’s life centered on farming—he was a steward of the land. He also had many hobbies that included: restoring tractors, flying his 1947 Piper Super Cub, and building airplanes. One of his great passions was entertaining audiences with the musical bones. A highlight of his young adult life was performing with his dad on the Ted Mack Show in 1961. Fifty years later, his talent was honored and validated by Mel Mercier, a native of Ireland, whose doctoral thesis was about Jerry’s style of bones-playing.

In 1963, Jerry served in the National Guard at Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri. He was proud to have served in the military, and was a member of the Ehlers-Gerken American Legion in Arcadia. He looked forward to donning his legion suit and marching in the color guard.

On August 2, 1986, Jerry was united in marriage with Sharon Procter. The first years of marriage, he taught her all about farm life: working with the hogs, using a shovel, and driving the tractors. So, she learned to love farm life alongside Jerry.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 28 years, Sharon Mescher of Halbur; brother, Paul (Ruth) Mescher of Halbur; sister, Bernice (Tom) Worrell of Miami, Florida; nieces: Michelle, Lisa, Amy, Jody, Brenda, Kelly, and Pam; nephews: Fr. Lynn, Loren, David, Pat, and Nick; seven cousins; sisters-in-law, Mimi (Johnny) Shoaf, Stanna (Larry) Wellman, Janet (Robin) Hance, brother-in-law, Stanton Procter, and nephew Adrien Guenel; and many great-nieces and -nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents: Albert and Ann Mescher; his sister and brother-in-law, Darlene and Paul Bruch; parents-in-law Stanton and Berta Procter; and sister-in-law Lela Nunley.

Obituary

Born March 31, 1930, he was the son of Bernard and Catherine (Rotert) Meiners. He grew up in the Dedham-Willey area and graduated from St. Mary’s School in Willey in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army July 8, 1953 and was stationed at Wurzburg, Germany. He was discharged on May 20, 1955.

Bernard married Dolores S. Halbur on January 24, 1956 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur. After being married Bernard and Dolores lived 3 miles north of Dedham for two years. In 1958, they moved to the farm they purchased four miles east of Dedham. They were the parents of six children: Daniel, Dale, David, Cathleen, Christine, and Gary. Dolores passed away January 21, 1978.

On August 9, 1980, Bernard married Marita Eickman at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. In May 2011, Bernard and Marita moved off the farm into the town of Coon Rapids, Iowa. They made their home there for 14 years. In April 2025, they moved to Parkview Assisted Living in Coon Rapids, Iowa.

He is a current member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Dedham, a member of the Dedham American Legion Post #20, and a member of the Manning VFW. In July 2001 Bernard, being a Korean Veteran, had the privilege to go on the Military Honor Flight to Washington DC. Just recently he was presented with a Quilt of Valor at Thomas Rest Haven, and at the age of 95 he still enjoyed attending the Legion meetings.

Bernard loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holiday gatherings were a treat for him to get to see most of them at one time. In his spare time Bernard enjoyed gathering black walnuts in the fall and kept busy shelling the walnuts during the winter. Family and friends benefited from the fruits of his labor.

I would like to deeply express my condolences for your loss and hopefully you can find comfort in family and friends but most of all thru Almighty God, whose ear and supplication is toward the distress ones. He will definitely fulfill His promise at Isaiah 25:8 “He will actually swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will certainly wipe the tears from all faces.”

My favorite memories of Jerry - stopping by after church and watching bowling tournaments with him, him helping us on the farm / us helping him - picking up rocks, baling hay, etc. He was also brave enough to help teach me to drive - he let me drive his truck under his guidance back and forth from Halbur. I also have fond memories of flying with him. He always had a big smile on his face, loved to talk, loved to talk about the Army, flying, farming, and really anything! He was proud that he served in the military and was tickled when I gave him a pair of my old combat boots to wear at the farm. He got me to serve in the Legion in Arcadia - even though it was so far from home, but that way I had the connection to Dad and Jerry. He's going to be missed!

We just learned of Jerry’s passing. Bob Everhart had a “last page” notice in an email we received. Our sympathies to you Sharon, Berni and Tom. I count my being able to play bass for the “Mescher Bones” on numerous stages at country music festivals as among my favorite festival memories. Our prayer: may Jerry rest like a lamb in the comfort of Jesus’ arms forever. Perk and Joan Washenberger
