Born on June 27, 1937 at Willey, Iowa, Janice was the daughter of John and Clara (Koster) Knobbe. She attended St. Mary’s School in Willey and later graduated with the first class from Kuemper High School in 1955.
On October 26, 1957, she was united in marriage to Leon Baumhover at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The couple made their home south of Carroll where Leon was engaged in farming and Janice was a devoted housewife and homemaker. Janice was a dedicated parishioner at Holy Angels Church. She sang with the choir, assisted with the church bulletin, was a housekeeper for several of the priests and also served as a communion minister.
Janice was known as a woman with a dry wit, who was never at a loss for words. An avid Scrabble player, crossword puzzle solver and dictionary word challenger she was a worthy advisory. Janice was a lifelong searcher of knowledge, often reading a book a week, researching genealogy, and staying abreast of current events. She enjoyed life; spending time with “her people” (family), playing games and broadening her view of the world through travel with her husband and children. As a mother, Janice encouraged her children to be independent, but kept them close. Janice was always ready for company and was generous in conversation and libations. She will be missed.
Left to celebrate her life is her husband of 59 years, Leon Baumhover of Carroll; her children: Jill Reiss of Omaha, Jay (Jan) Baumhover of Mt. Carmel, Sue (Daniel) Guido of Phoenix, Karla (Mayo) Baumhover Pengsagun of Thailand, Julie (Scott) Mankin of West Linn, OR, and Jessica (Andy) Riesselman of Sioux Falls, SD; 8 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; her sister, Bonnie Young of Casa Grande, AZ; her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Dorothy Knobbe of Carroll, Helen Knobbe of California, Jean Knobbe of Guthrie Center, Loras Baumhover of Auburn, NE, Norb (Linda) Baumhover of Carroll, Harry (LaVonne) Baumhover of Carroll, Leonard (Janet) Baumhover of Audubon, Gene (Janet) Baumhover of Leawood, Kansas, Vern (Jean) Baumhover of Overland Park, KS, Mark (Vivian) Baumhover of Hills, Dean Baumhover of Scranton, Marita Mohr of Des Moines, Donna (Mike) Stitz of Carroll, Jane (Jim) Morrison of Dunlap, IL, Anne Baumhover of Freemont, NE and Marcia Baumhover of Des Moines; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended relatives and many friends.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents, John and Clara Knobbe; her daughter, Diane; her son, Daniel; and her siblings: Merlin Knobbe, Florence Huegerich, Jackie Sibenaller, Jerry Knobbe, Edwin Knobbe, Bob Knobbe, Roy Knobbe, and Lee Knobbe.
