John (Jack) Francis Thein was born August 3, 1932, the son of Philip and Elisabeth (Schreck) Thein. He lived in Dedham during his childhood, with his family moving to Carroll when Jack was in 8th grade. He remained a life-long resident of Carroll. He graduated from Carroll High School in 1950 and served in the United States Air Force from 1951-1954. On July 30, 1955, he married Bonnie Riesberg at St. Augustine Church in Halbur. To this day, the hottest July 30 on record remains July 30, 1955. Jack worked for Farner-Bocken for 10 years and Hunt-Wesson Foods for 6 years. In 1969, he joined The Equitable of New York Insurance Company (now AXA-Equitable) and remained with the company until his retirement 2 years ago. He earned a place in the prestigious Equitable Hall of Fame.

He was an active member of St. Lawrence Church for over 50 years. He was a member of the American Legion and the American Legion Honor Guard for many years and served as the Legion Commander from 2011 to 2013. Most recently, Jack was elected as County Commander of the Legion. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a member of the Carroll Fire Department for over 35 years.

Jack played fast pitch softball for the Dedham Merchants for many years. Defensively, his duties were behind the plate as the team’s catcher. He was even a bigger force offensively and hit many home runs, including the famous shot heard around Carroll County, where he hit the corn bins in Dedham. He loved every minute of fast pitch softball and considered his teammates his best friends.

Jack served on the Kuemper Foundation Board and also served on the Carroll County Board of Supervisors.

Jack loved golf, fishing and spending time with his 7 grandchildren. He was extremely proud of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He loved people, and never met anyone he didn’t like. He enjoyed watching all sports, and was especially fond of Kuemper sports and Iowa State football and basketball. Jack possessed a wonderful sense of humor and had a joke for every occasion! He took great joy in making others happy.

Jack will be remembered for his sense of humor, his love for sports, including golf and fast pitch softball, and his deep love for church and community.

Obituary

Born March 31, 1930, he was the son of Bernard and Catherine (Rotert) Meiners. He grew up in the Dedham-Willey area and graduated from St. Mary’s School in Willey in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army July 8, 1953 and was stationed at Wurzburg, Germany. He was discharged on May 20, 1955.

Bernard married Dolores S. Halbur on January 24, 1956 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur. After being married Bernard and Dolores lived 3 miles north of Dedham for two years. In 1958, they moved to the farm they purchased four miles east of Dedham. They were the parents of six children: Daniel, Dale, David, Cathleen, Christine, and Gary. Dolores passed away January 21, 1978.

On August 9, 1980, Bernard married Marita Eickman at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. In May 2011, Bernard and Marita moved off the farm into the town of Coon Rapids, Iowa. They made their home there for 14 years. In April 2025, they moved to Parkview Assisted Living in Coon Rapids, Iowa.

In July 2001 Bernard, being a Korean Veteran, had the privilege to go on the Military Honor Flight to Washington DC. Just recently he was presented with a Quilt of Valor at Thomas Rest Haven, and at the age of 95 he still enjoyed attending the Legion meetings.

Bernard loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holiday gatherings were a treat for him to get to see most of them at one time. In his spare time Bernard enjoyed gathering black walnuts in the fall and kept busy shelling the walnuts during the winter. Family and friends benefited from the fruits of his labor.

Bernard is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marita Meiners; his children, Dale (Mary) Meiners of Carroll, David (Jane) Meiners of Varna, IL, Cathleen (Larry) Nees of Coon Rapids, Christine (Mark) Schultes of Dedham, and Gary (Barb) Meiners of Manson; 19 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren with 2 more coming in October; a brother Anthony (Colleen) Meiners of Carroll; 2 sisters, Catherine Wittrock of Carroll and Marcella Naberhaus of Carroll; his sisters-in-laws, Margaret (Tom) Denker of Manning, and Pat (Joe) Goblirsch of Jesup. Dear Bonnie & family, Even though Jack was much older than me, I remember his presence with my brother, Tom. Also, my Dad spoke so much of him as a great Fire Fighter and friend. We are remembering all of you in our prayers. We send our deep sympathy and loving thoughts. Jim and Judy (Roth) Peitz Oregon City, OR

He would often join us when us kids were at your house. Always welcoming and accepting each of us - the hang out house. So many good memories and that is what we all should focus on. Take care of yourself - you have lots of support I am sure and remember all the great times😄--- take care Sandy

Thinking about all of the Thein family today and wishing I could be there. So sorry to hear about Jack's death. I have fond memories of great summer picnics with the whole crowd and Jack was always up for some fun with all the kids. And of course those early summer ballgames I usually make it back for will never be quite the same. Peace and Love to Bonnie, Scott, Lori, Jill and all family and friends. Kristie Tigges
