Irene Wendl, age 89, of Carroll, Iowa, died Saturday evening, April 26, 2008, at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, May 1, 2008, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Schott. Lector will be Michelle Guinan. Gift Bearers will be Jim, Carol, Lucas, Lauren, and David Wendl. Mass Servers will be Chris Klocke, Mary Ellis, Annie Ellis, and Andy Ellis. Eucharistic Ministers will be Don Stevens and Rose and John Guinan. Soloist will be Elizabeth Stevens. Casket Bearers will be Lucas Wendl, Jeff Ellis, Tyler Weisz, Justin Klocke, Bill Wendl, Aivaras Guinan, Sam Wendl, and Kurt Wendl. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 2:30 P.M. Wednesday. A rosary will be prayed at 3 P.M. Wednesday. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Wednesday by St. Lawrence Parish. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Kuemper Catholic Schools Foundation. Mrs. Wendl was born on September 17, 1918, at Exira, Iowa, the daughter of Peter J. and Julia (Reiff) Thielen, Sr. She spent her younger years in the Exira, Manning, Templeton, and Willey communities and attended Country School. On May 26, 1942, she was married to Paul J. Wendl at St. Mary Church in Willey with Father H.J. Dries and Father Michael Wendl officiating. The couple farmed three miles southeast of Willey until 1983 when they moved to their home in Carroll. She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish and Parish Ladies Guild. Mrs. Wendl enjoyed raising her family, her grandchildren, gardening, and doing volunteer work for her parish. Survivors include her children, Denis Wendl and his wife Sue of Liberty, Missouri, Julie Gambale and her husband Jim of West Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Don Wendl and his wife Juhree of Des Moines, Paul Wendl Jr. and his wife Linda of Panora, Mary Stevens and her husband Don of Sioux City, Rose Guinan and her husband John of Willey, John Wendl and his wife Jean of Omaha, Nebr., Jane Wendl-Klocke of Audubon, Jean Weisz and her husband Lynn of Panora, Ruth Ellis and her husband Dan of Ida Grove, and Jim Wendl and his wife Carol of Panora; 41 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; brothers, Romain Thielen and his wife Rose of Granger, and Peter Thielen Jr. of Carroll; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Marie Thielen of Carroll, Evelyn Thielen of Carroll, Carol Thielen of Ft. Dodge, Alvina Wendl of LeMars, Victor and Marie Wendl of Carroll, Sister Joan Marie Wendl F.S.P.A. of LaCrosse, Wisc., and Sister Lydia Wendl F.S.P.A. of LaCrosse, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul Wendl, in July 1995; brothers, Edwin, Norbert, William, and Eugene Thielen; and sisters, Kathleen Thielen and Mary Ann Venteicher.
