Germaine Nieland, 93 of Auburn, died Monday, December 10, 2012 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 13, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Auburn. The Celebrant will be Fr. Lynn Bruch. Music will be by Carmen Ludwig and the St. Mary’s Choir. Mass servers will be Matthew Nieland and Tia Nieland. Lector for the funeral mass will be Randy Nieland. Gift Bearers will be: Susan Baumhover, Jodi Roland, Mikayla Nieland and Jenni Vilhauer. Eucharistic Ministers will be: Randy Nieland, Don Nieland and Carolyn Nieland. Casket Bearers will be: Kevin Nieland, Jamie Nieland, Tanner Nieland, Todd Roland, Tyler Nieland, Doug Baumhover, and Paul Siegner. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery near Auburn.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m. by St. Mary’s Altar Society and a Christian Wake Service at 6 p.m. by St. Mary’s Parish.
The casket will be moved to St. Mary’s Church at 9 a.m. on Thursday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass.

Born on February 16, 1919 at Auburn, Iowa, Germaine was the daughter of Herman and Ida (Schoo) Schelle. She attended country school in the Auburn and Mt. Carmel area and later graduated from Auburn Public School with the Class of 1937. On April 8, 1940 she married Arnold Nieland at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Auburn. The couple farmed east of Lidderdale and south of Breda before settling on the family farm southwest of Auburn. In 1989 they moved to their home in Auburn and in May of 2007 they both became residents of St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll. Germaine enjoyed playing cards, her sewing club, dancing, cooking, and baking. She loved hosting family gatherings and was devoted to her faith and her family. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Parish, and Parish Altar Society.
Survivors include her sons: Jerry Nieland and wife Carolyn of Auburn, Allen Nieland and wife Dianne of Carroll, Randy Nieland and wife Debbie of Auburn, and Don Nieland and wife Laurie of Auburn; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Marie Nieland of Storm Lake; as well as other extended relatives and many friends.
Germaine was preceded in death by her parents; husband Arnold in January of 2011; her grandson, Michael Venteicher; her brother Vincent Schelle; and one brother in infancy.
