Gaylord Stangl, age 80, of rural Coon Rapids, Iowa, died early Wednesday, February 4, 2009, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, February 7, 2009, at St. Joseph Church in Dedham. The Celebrant will be Father Anthony Pick assisted by Deacon Louis Meiners. The casket will be taken to the church at 8:30 A.M. Saturday to lie in state until the time of the funeral mass. Lector will be Sister Myra Weitl, O.S.F. Gift Bearers will be granddaughters, Rachael Byrum, Sarah Schlichte, Elizabeth Schlichte, and Stephanie Gonnerman. Organist will be a daughter, Faye Seidl. Vocals will be by the St. Joseph Choir. Mass Servers will be Danny and Brittany Baumhover. Eucharistic Ministers will be Sister Myra Weitl, O.S.F. and Kevin Schultes. Honorary Pallbearers will be grandchildren, Kathy Schmitz, Laura Holmes, Cheryl Gonnerman, Nicholas Byrum, Keri Kendrick, Max Pinto, Riley McElroy, and Madeline McElroy. Casket Bearers will be grandsons, Brett Stangl, Keith Stangl, James Darby, Jeff Darby, Matt Gonnerman, Dan Gonnerman, Ryan Schlichte, and Steven Schlichte. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Dedham with military honors conducted by the Dedham American Legion. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 2:30 P.M. Friday. A rosary will be prayed at 3 P.M. Friday. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Friday by St. Joseph Parish. Mr. Stangl was born on September 4, 1928, at Mt. Carmel, Iowa, the son of Frank and Julia (Bruning) Stangl. He spent his younger years in the Mt. Carmel community and attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School and graduated from Carroll High School. He entered the U.S. Army in December 1950 and was stationed in Baumholder, Germany, during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in November 1952. On April 10, 1951, he was married to Arlene Weitl at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton with Father Schultes officiating. In March 1953 the couple moved to their farm four miles east of Dedham. Mr. Stangl ran a grain and dairy farm operation. He was a member of St. Joseph Parish and served his parish as a Eucharistic Minister, Parish Director, and member of the Parish Choir. He was also a member of the Dedham American Legion and served on the Mid-American Dairy Board. Mr. Stangl enjoyed his family, playing baseball in his younger years, playing cards, and attending his Army reunions. Survivors include his wife, Arlene Stangl of Coon Rapids; children, Gail Darby and her husband James of Bellevue, Wash., Sandra Gonnerman and her husband Rod of Lincoln, Nebr., Faye Seidl and her husband Dave of Coon Rapids, Craig Stangl and his wife Jill Coon Rapids, Royce Stangl and his special friend Melody Lager of Coon Rapids, Julia Schlichte and her husband LeRoy of Manning, Peggy Pinto and her husband Martin of Pinamar, Argentina, Linda Byrum and her husband Joe of West Des Moines, and Leann McElroy and her husband Dan of West Des Moines; 20 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; sisters, Eunice Reising of Breda, Cedella Danzer of Carroll, Lorraine Weitl of Carroll, and Marilyn Berg and her husband Dennis of Arcadia; brothers, Merle Stangl of Atlantic, Warren Stangl and his wife Laura of Claremont, Minn., and Glenn Stangl and his wife Margaret of Osage; and a sister-in-law, Rita Stangl of Manilla. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Alma Mattes and Elaine Schmitz; and brothers, Kenneth Stangl and Vernon Stangl.
