Fern Schafer, age 91, of Carroll, died Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Accura Health Care in Ames, Iowa.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 19, 2018 at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. Fr. Kevin Richter will preside the service. Casket Bearers will be Brad Kinman, Brian Kinman, Jordan Cole, Justin Adams, Ryan Cole, and Aaron Cole. Burial will immediately follow the service at St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Breda.
Visitation will begin at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. and continue until the time of the service.

Fern was born on August 8, 1926 at Breda, Iowa, the daughter of Ben and Mary (Wessling) Boeckman. She grew up in Breda, and graduated from St. Bernard’s High School. Following her formal education Fern attended cosmetology school in Ft. Dodge, and upon completion she returned to Carroll.
On April 28, 1951, Fern was united in marriage to Gale Schafer at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. The couple made their home in Carroll, and Fern became a devoted homemaker. Fern enjoyed camping, playing cards, especially Euchre, and socializing with her many friends. Most of all Fern enjoyed spending time with her family especially all of her grandchildren. Fern was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll.
Left to celebrate Fern’s life is her daughter: Cindy Cole and her husband Dick of Jewell; grandchildren: Ryan, Tracie, Aaron, Brian, and Brad; 9 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson; her sister, Lucille Steinkamp of Colorado. Fern was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Mary Boeckman; her husband, Gale Schafer, her daughter, Charlotte Kinman; her brother: Cecil (Louise) Boeckman, her sister: Charlotte Precott; and a brother-in-law: Norv Steinkamp.
