On November 23, 1931, Arlene Clara Neppel was born to Max and Rose Neppel, the 7th of 7 children, in a little farmhouse not far from Willey, IA. She attended schools near Willey, IA and Lidderdale, IA, and at St. Angela Academy in Carroll, IA. She moved to Carroll with her beloved mother, Rose, as a young woman.

On June 10, 1953, Arlene and Joseph Dalhoff were married at St. Lawrence Church, Carroll, by the Rev. Poeckes. Arlene and Joe initially made their home in Fort Smith, AR at Camp Chaffee during Joe’s commission in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. The couple then lived in Council Bluffs, IA, before settling in Carroll in 1957. Arlene helped Joe operate the family business, Joe’s Paint Center, for 40 years, and while Joe was known as “Woofer, Arlene was his “Honeybunch”. In 2000, Arlene sold the building in which the family business operated following Joe’s passing.

Arlene was an active wife and mother. She enjoyed meeting with her neighbors, having coffee with friends, playing golf, walking around Swan Lake, playing cards, and keeping up with Joe’s gardening. In their younger years, Arlene and Joe enjoyed warm summer days with their children at Lake Panorama, and were involved in the Jaycees, Knights of Columbus, Elks, Carroll Swim Team, and Little League Baseball, among other community organizations. Arlene had an impressive collection of angel figurines, and her children will always remember her as an angel herself.

Arlene was a member of St. John Paul II Parish, St. Lawrence Ladies Guild, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed volunteering at the New Hope Village Store, and the St. Anthony Hospital Atrium Desk and Gift Store. She loved visiting her children and grandchildren and taking local trips with friends. She considered travels to the holy sites of Medjugorje and those in Italy as spiritually rewarding. She attended daily mass and frequented the adoration chapel as long as she was able.

Arlene is survived by her children: Stan Dalhoff of Carroll, Ann (Michael) White of Maple Grove, MN, Renee (Thomas) Goodhew of Eugene, OR, Thomas (Jill) Dalhoff of White Bear Township, MN, Jane (Jerry) Fletcher of Troutman, NC, and Jeff (Tara) Dalhoff of Silver Spring, MD; grandchildren Paul White, Rob (Rachel) White, Justin White, Lisa Goodhew, Joe Goodhew, John Goodhew, Mary Goodhew, Abby Goodhew, Emily Dalhoff, Jacob Dalhoff, Jessica Fletcher, and Jarrett Fletcher; sisters-in-law Orsola Neppel of Jackson, NJ, Mary Lou Maranell of Milford, IA, Patti Hesch of Austin, MN, Darlene Dalhoff of Fairport Harbor, OH, JoAnn Stransky of Henderson, NV; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Born March 31, 1930, he was the son of Bernard and Catherine (Rotert) Meiners. He grew up in the Dedham-Willey area and graduated from St. Mary’s School in Willey in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army July 8, 1953 and was stationed at Wurzburg, Germany. He was discharged on May 20, 1955.

Bernard married Dolores S. Halbur on January 24, 1956 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur. After being married Bernard and Dolores lived 3 miles north of Dedham for two years. In 1958, they moved to the farm they purchased four miles east of Dedham. They were the parents of six children: Daniel, Dale, David, Cathleen, Christine, and Gary. Dolores passed away January 21, 1978.

On August 9, 1980, Bernard married Marita Eickman at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. In May 2011, Bernard and Marita moved off the farm into the town of Coon Rapids, Iowa. They made their home there for 14 years. In April 2025, they moved to Parkview Assisted Living in Coon Rapids, Iowa.

In July 2001 Bernard, being a Korean Veteran, had the privilege to go on the Military Honor Flight to Washington DC. Just recently he was presented with a Quilt of Valor at Thomas Rest Haven, and at the age of 95 he still enjoyed attending the Legion meetings.

Bernard loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holiday gatherings were a treat for him to get to see most of them at one time. In his spare time Bernard enjoyed gathering black walnuts in the fall and kept busy shelling the walnuts during the winter. Family and friends benefited from the fruits of his labor.

I first met Arlene when I became the volunteer coordinator for St Anthony Regional Hospice in July of 2013. Arlene was serving as a volunteer. She was so very kind and welcoming to me. Arlene ALWAYS had a kind word of encouragement and appreciation for me and the other volunteers. She helped out when asked to, whether it was in the office or was sitting with a patient, offering companionship and support. After Arlene "retired" from volunteering with hospice, I would see her at the volunteer desk and it was always a pleasure and highlight of the day to catch up with her and visit! Her beautiful smile and sincerity will be missed!

I remember Aunt Arlene as such a sweet and patient lady who at all the family reunions tried to calm the chaos of those large gatherings. Later when I came back to Carroll for visits she and Joe would ask about my career and offer support. I remember what a loving and attentive caregiver she was when Joe was ill. She made a point of visiting my mother when she moved to assisted living then skilled care, and often in the hospital. She lifted up all those she met.
