Born on February 6, 1931 in Earling, Iowa, Albert Joseph was the son of Carl and Edith (Rosmann) Assmann. He grew up in Earling before the family relocated to the Carroll area. In 1950 Albert graduated from Carroll High School. On August 9, 1952 Albert was united in marriage to Eunice A. Augustine at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Carroll.

Albert had a passion for working with his hands as a carpenter in his younger years, and upon marriage, he turned his passion to working his farm, and feeding livestock. Albert worked the land for years, farming just outside of Lidderdale. In addition, he spent many years custom farming for others. The end of most summers was marked by a family vacation to Northern Wisconsin, where Albert could often be found behind the wheel of the speedboat pulling as many skiers as the boat could handle.

In his retirement years, he spent countless hours playing cards at Al’s Corner, and the Carroll Recreation Center. He and his wife Eunice spent their retirement winters in Phoenix, at their daughter Jeanne’s home, where he developed a skill for harvesting oranges, and polishing his riding lawn mower skills, a smaller version of the John Deere tractor. Albert will be remembered by his family and friends for his strong work ethic, his love for his farm and family, his ability to fix anything, and don’t forget the Thursday night men’s golf at the Carroll Municipal Golf Course. Albert was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Lidderdale, a church he helped build in his younger years.

Left to celebrate Albert’s life is his wife: Eunice of Lidderdale; his children: Jeanne Gelfand of Phoenix, AZ, Robert (Tammie) Ausman of Houston, TX, Mary Jo (Steve) Schacher of San Francisco, CA; Tom (Jacki) Ausman of Elkhart, Doug Ausman of Carroll, Sandy (Darren) Bell of Los Angeles, CA, and Kristin (Drew) Thiel of Pittsburgh, PA; grandchildren: Robert Ausman, Jr., Tabitha Ausman, Scotty Ausman, Rikki Schechinger, Ashley Ausman, Andrew Ausman, Shelby Ausman, Nick Bell, Brett Bell, Alyssa Thiel, and Hailey Thiel; his siblings: John (Jean) Assmann of Earling, and Elizabeth “Betty” (Neil) Klein of Omaha, NE; his sister-in-laws: Mary Ausman of Carroll, and Doris Ausman of LaPalma, CA; his brother-in-law: Alfred (Helen) Nielsen of Johnston; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.

Albert was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law: Leo and Elizabeth (Miranowski) Augustine; a son: Michael David Ausman; a son-in-law: William Gelfand, M.D.; a grandson: Michael Thomas Ausman; and his siblings: Francis Ausman, James Ausman, Donna Lenz and Linda Nielson.

Obituary

Born March 31, 1930, he was the son of Bernard and Catherine (Rotert) Meiners. He grew up in the Dedham-Willey area and graduated from St. Mary’s School in Willey in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army July 8, 1953 and was stationed at Wurzburg, Germany. He was discharged on May 20, 1955.

Bernard married Dolores S. Halbur on January 24, 1956 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur. After being married Bernard and Dolores lived 3 miles north of Dedham for two years. In 1958, they moved to the farm they purchased four miles east of Dedham. They were the parents of six children: Daniel, Dale, David, Cathleen, Christine, and Gary. Dolores passed away January 21, 1978.

On August 9, 1980, Bernard married Marita Eickman at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. In May 2011, Bernard and Marita moved off the farm into the town of Coon Rapids, Iowa. They made their home there for 14 years. In April 2025, they moved to Parkview Assisted Living in Coon Rapids, Iowa.

He is a current member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Dedham, a member of the Dedham American Legion Post #20, and a member of the Manning VFW. In July 2001 Bernard, being a Korean Veteran, had the privilege to go on the Military Honor Flight to Washington DC. Just recently he was presented with a Quilt of Valor at Thomas Rest Haven, and at the age of 95 he still enjoyed attending the Legion meetings.

Bernard loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holiday gatherings were a treat for him to get to see most of them at one time. In his spare time Bernard enjoyed gathering black walnuts in the fall and kept busy shelling the walnuts during the winter. Family and friends benefited from the fruits of his labor.

Bernard is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marita Meiners; his children, Dale (Mary) Meiners of Carroll, David (Jane) Meiners of Varna, IL, Cathleen (Larry) Nees of Coon Rapids, Christine (Mark) Schultes of Dedham, and Gary (Barb) Meiners of Manson; 19 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren with 2 more coming in October; a brother Anthony (Colleen) Meiners of Carroll; 2 sisters, Catherine Wittrock of Carroll and Marcella Naberhaus of Carroll; his sisters-in-laws, Margaret (Tom) Denker of Manning, and Pat (Joe) Goblirsch of Jesup. The first time we met Albert and Eunice on the farm we felt like we belonged. With so much love and kindness they made us feel at home. As a child Nichole loved getting the chance to hold the baby pigs and be doted on when she went out to the farm with Uncle Tom and Aunt Jacki. Nichole and I also remember how in the midst of our sorrow of a loved one passing away the whole Ausman Family took us in to celebrate Christmas day. It was such a blessing to be surrounded by so much love. During this time we pray that God's peace will soothe you. His grace will hold you and His love will comfort you. Love, Billie (Mom) & Nichole (Daughter) Clemens

Eunice & Family, Our deepest sympathy on your loss. Uncle Albert always had a smile for us and a kind word. I always remember going to your farm and Jeanne & I painting the white picket house yard fence. I had to stand on a 5 gallon bucket to reach, and of course, that worked until the bucket tipped over and I had paint everywhere. Boy, we had fun and lots of laughs!! Thanks for the great memories on the Ausman farm! Love, Randy & Karen (Lenz) Zubrod and Family
