Agnes Lorraine Kirsch McKone was born February 2, 1930 in Charles City, Iowa. Agnes was the sixth child and fifth daughter of Louis and Eva (Wolf) Kirsch. Agnes grew up shy – she said because her sisters did all the talking – and with a love of science. She was the only girl in her high school physics class and one of her first jobs was with the Floyd County Weed Commissioner’s office. She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Charles City in 1948. She then attended Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Agnes graduated with a degree in Medical Technology which allowed her to indulge her love of chemistry, microbiology and pathology.

Agnes met Bob McKone at the American Legion Club in Charles City. They wed on September 4, 1954 at Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City. Bob worked as an insurance salesman and they lived first in Mason City where Susan was born, then to Spencer, then Spirit Lake where Timothy was born, then Atlantic and finally to Carroll where Joseph and William were born. They loved living in Carroll and developed many close friendships that greatly enriched their lives. Agnes worked at St. Anthony Hospital eventually becoming director of the laboratory. She also worked for the Carroll County ambulance service as an EMT and convinced her sons Tim and Joseph to join her in training so all three could work for the service. Timothy eventually went on to medical school and earned his MD degree and Joseph earned his RN degree. Agnes held the position of director of the Lab for 30 years before retiring in 1992. She remained on staff as a part-time cytotechnologist until she retired completely at age 80.

Agnes and Bob were devout Catholics. They were members of St. Lawrence Parish and their children attended and graduated from St. Lawrence School and Kuemper High School. All her life Agnes prayed the rosary and was deeply committed to attending Sunday mass. Bob and Agnes were active in the Elks Club. They enjoyed the annual family reunion trips to Holly’s Resort on Ottertail Lake in Minnesota. They also made many fishing trips to Canada and winter trips to Florida. She enjoyed golf at the Country Club and Municipal golf courses. She and Bob were active in the Carroll Community Theatre. Agnes enjoyed playing in many bridge clubs over the years and bridge continued to be one of the last pleasures she had late in life. In 2018 Agnes moved to Northfield, MN to be closer to her son, Tim. She was living at the Northfield Retirement Community at the time of her death.

Survivors include her children, Susan McKone (Doug) Burks, Decorah, Dr. Tim (Marian) McKone, Northfield, MN., William (Marion) McKone, Centennial, CO., daughter-in-law, Margaret McKone, Lisbon. Eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, sister Arlis Ford of Hiawatha. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert who passed away on April 20, 2014, her son Joseph, her parents, Louis and Eva Kirsch, her brother and sister-in-law Robert Kirsch and Phyllis, sisters and brothers-in-law Helen McGee and Mike, Lois Havlik and Bob, Marie DeBakey and Ray, and brother-in-law Bob Ford.

Obituary

Born March 31, 1930, he was the son of Bernard and Catherine (Rotert) Meiners. He grew up in the Dedham-Willey area and graduated from St. Mary’s School in Willey in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army July 8, 1953 and was stationed at Wurzburg, Germany. He was discharged on May 20, 1955.

Bernard married Dolores S. Halbur on January 24, 1956 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur. After being married Bernard and Dolores lived 3 miles north of Dedham for two years. In 1958, they moved to the farm they purchased four miles east of Dedham. They were the parents of six children: Daniel, Dale, David, Cathleen, Christine, and Gary. Dolores passed away January 21, 1978.

On August 9, 1980, Bernard married Marita Eickman at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. In May 2011, Bernard and Marita moved off the farm into the town of Coon Rapids, Iowa. They made their home there for 14 years. In April 2025, they moved to Parkview Assisted Living in Coon Rapids, Iowa.

He is a current member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Dedham, a member of the Dedham American Legion Post #20, and a member of the Manning VFW. In July 2001 Bernard, being a Korean Veteran, had the privilege to go on the Military Honor Flight to Washington DC. Just recently he was presented with a Quilt of Valor at Thomas Rest Haven, and at the age of 95 he still enjoyed attending the Legion meetings.

Bernard loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holiday gatherings were a treat for him to get to see most of them at one time. In his spare time Bernard enjoyed gathering black walnuts in the fall and kept busy shelling the walnuts during the winter. Family and friends benefited from the fruits of his labor.
