Virginia Ann Ricke Carlin was born April 14, 1930, to Arthur H and Nellie (Fee) Ricke. She was a lifelong resident of Breda, Iowa and Saint Bernard’s Catholic Church. Virginia attended Carroll High School graduating in 1947. Later, she attended St. Anthony’s School of Nursing graduating in 1951. Virginia met John Martin Carlin at Western Grocers in Carroll, where he was a salesman who delivered goods to her father’s store, Ricke General Store in Breda. John & Virginia were married on October 1,1951 at St. Bernards in Breda. They welcomed their daughter, Roxanne (Rohner), in 1952 and their son, Richard, in 1954.

Virginia dedicated her working years as a Registered Nurse at the Carroll Medical Center, The Carroll Health Center, and The Carroll Manor until her well-deserved retirement at the age of 79. In addition to her nursing career, Virginia was an active member of the community. She was a proud member of the American Legion Post 607 Auxiliary for over 80 years and the Carroll County Republican daughters. Virginia remained an avid Carroll High School sports fan and an active member of the Carroll High School alumni.

The majority of her married life, you would find her spending time with her family and multitude of friends at the cabin in Lake View, Iowa. Those visiting could always count on Virginia having a swimsuit in their size so they could enjoy the lake as much as she did. Everyone visiting there was family. She enjoyed traveling, especially to visit family in Maine, Massachusetts and Colorado. She and John established a family tradition of going to the Iowa State Fair every year; which will be forever commemorated by a brick, engraved with their name at the entrance of the horse barn. Her hobbies also included card clubs with her friends antiquing and of course bingo.

Left to cherish her memory are her son Rick (Ruth Fogler); son-in-law Ed Rohner; her grandchildren: Tracie (Tom) Moss, Heather (Brian) Fisher, Tony (Michelle) Rohner, Chris Fogler and Kate Fogler; great-grandchildren: Lindsey (Sydney) Slater, Michelle (Josh) Hoffman, Zach (Emily) Moss, Samantha Moss, Jacob (Britt) Sander, Andrea Sander, Kiana Rohner, Alexis, Rohner, Emmalynn Rohner; bonus grandchildren: Madilynn Fisher, Gracie Fisher and Cora Fisher; her great-great-grandchildren: Sydney Slater Jr., Chloe Hoffman, Carlin Okirie, Luka Okirie; sister-in-law Peggy Carlin, “Terry’s People”, along with special cousins Jim Ulveling and Mary Ann Huegerich.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John, her daughter Roxanne, and brother-in-law Terry Carlin.

Obituary

Born March 31, 1930, he was the son of Bernard and Catherine (Rotert) Meiners. He grew up in the Dedham-Willey area and graduated from St. Mary’s School in Willey in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army July 8, 1953 and was stationed at Wurzburg, Germany. He was discharged on May 20, 1955.

Bernard married Dolores S. Halbur on January 24, 1956 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur. After being married Bernard and Dolores lived 3 miles north of Dedham for two years. In 1958, they moved to the farm they purchased four miles east of Dedham. They were the parents of six children: Daniel, Dale, David, Cathleen, Christine, and Gary. Dolores passed away January 21, 1978.

On August 9, 1980, Bernard married Marita Eickman at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. In May 2011, Bernard and Marita moved off the farm into the town of Coon Rapids, Iowa. They made their home there for 14 years. In April 2025, they moved to Parkview Assisted Living in Coon Rapids, Iowa.

During Bernard’s lifetime, he farmed, had a dairy operation, had a cow/calf operation, and raised hogs. He retired in 1992. He is a current member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Dedham, a member of the Dedham American Legion Post #20, and a member of the Manning VFW. In July 2001 Bernard, being a Korean Veteran, had the privilege to go on the Military Honor Flight to Washington DC. Just recently he was presented with a Quilt of Valor at Thomas Rest Haven, and at the age of 95 he still enjoyed attending the Legion meetings.

Bernard loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holiday gatherings were a treat for him to get to see most of them at one time. In his spare time Bernard enjoyed gathering black walnuts in the fall and kept busy shelling the walnuts during the winter. Family and friends benefited from the fruits of his labor.

Bernard is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marita Meiners; his children, Dale (Mary) Meiners of Carroll, David (Jane) Meiners of Varna, IL, Cathleen (Larry) Nees of Coon Rapids, Christine (Mark) Schultes of Dedham, and Gary (Barb) Meiners of Manson; 19 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren with 2 more coming in October; a brother Anthony (Colleen) Meiners of Carroll; 2 sisters, Catherine Wittrock of Carroll and Marcella Naberhaus of Carroll; his sisters-in-laws, Margaret (Tom) Denker of Manning, and Pat (Joe) Goblirsch of Jesup. I remember visiting with Aunt Virginia and Uncle John on several occasions. We stopped in Breda on our way cross country a couple of times. She was always warm and inviting. My dad Terry Carlin, was always excited when they visit us in Massachusetts and Maine. Our thoughts and prayers are for all of Aunt Virginia's family. May your fond memories give you comfort Jill Elaine Carlin, Bob Blaisdell and family

Ginny and my mother were in nursing school together and were best friends all their lives. Age and distance finally caught up with them and staying in contact became difficult and eventually impossible. My father, John Ragaller and your father were lifelong friends and in the summer of 1950 Ginny and John setup a blind date between my parents. So here I am! I absolutely loved Ginny and John. I too remember spending time at the lake. Hamburgers, hotdogs and 8 foot tables in the yard with fixing, salads and anything you wanted. Then to the lake for a swim. Every time I was at the lake, I would climb the big hill, (it was bigger back then) opened the magic gate to find them on the porch. I remember the home in Breda too but not so much. I was born in 1959 which made me poison to Ricky and my brother. 4th of Julys buying beer to support St. Bernard’s nuns. What wonderful memories of two very loving friends. Ricky and Ed, my mother, brother and I offer our deepest condolences for your loss. Ironically, my mother’s 96th birthday was on Saturday, January 24th. That’s how close they were in life and death.
