Thomas Broich, age 81, of Carroll, Iowa, died early Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 A.M., Saturday, March 6, 2010, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Schott. Lector will be Marlys Yawarsky. Gift Bearers will be Jean Broich, Marlys Yawarsky, and Sue Riesselman. Mass Servers will be Liz Yawarsky, Jacob Bachman, and Ann Steffen. Eucharistic Ministers will be Betty Pollastrini, Imelda Langel, and Arlene Dalhoff. Casket Bearers will be Stan Broich, Allen Broich, Tom J. Broich, Jeff Klocke, David Langel, and Rick Broich. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. Friday. A rosary will be prayed at 4 P.M. Friday by the Carroll Knights of Columbus. There will be a Christian wake service at 6:30 P.M. Friday by St. Lawrence Parish. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or church for the St. Lawrence Second Century Campaign or the Kuemper Catholic Schools Foundation.
Mr. Broich was born on January 4, 1929, at Willey, Iowa, the son of John and Emilia (Neppl) Broich. He spent his younger years in the Willey community and attended St. Mary School and Carroll High School. He entered the U.S. Army in January 1951 and served overseas during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in October 1952 at the rank of Sergeant. On January 10, 1953, he was married to Yvonne Langel at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton with Father William Buchholz officiating. The couple made their home in Carroll. In the early years Tom was employed by Russell Taylor Construction and in 1957 started Broich Brothers Masonry Company with his brother Clayton. The Broich Brothers operated their business for 47 years. He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, Carroll American Legion, Carroll Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus, and the Loyal Order of Moose. Tom enjoyed his family, fishing, playing cards, and going to the casino.
Survivors include his wife, Yvonne Broich of Carroll; his brothers and sisters, Robert Broich of Carroll, Clayton Broich and wife Bernita of Carroll, Jerome Broich and wife Doris of Carroll, Delores Langel and husband Vern of Omaha, Nebr., Marilyn Snyder and husband Dale of Breda, Joleen Klocke and husband Ron of Carroll, John Broich and wife Mary Jo of Carroll, and Laurel Jean Heithoff and husband Denis of Carroll; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, LaVern and Louetta Langel of Templeton, Elmer and Imelda Langel of Manning, and Don and Vera Schettler of Omaha, Nebraska; and by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Marvin Broich; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joe and Mary Langel; and by sisters-in-law, Edna Schettler and Edra Broich.
