Sharyl, “Sheri” Dirkx, the daughter of Jack and Bunny (Holt) Clapper was born on September 8, 1933 on the family farm southwest of Auburn, Iowa. She attended country school and high school in Auburn. She then went on to lab tech training in Minneapolis.
On November 23, 1953 Sheri was united in marriage to Kenneth “Fuzzy” Dirkx at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Auburn. The couple farmed in the Mt. Carmel and Auburn areas. Sheri worked at McCrary Rost Clinic and Stewart Memorial Hospital for over 40 years.
Sheri enjoyed quilting, butterflies, her grandchildren, and playing cards. She was involved in Christian Mothers, American Legion Auxiliary, Third Order of Secular Franciscan, Red Hat Society, Les Filles d’Etude, and blood drives. She painted ceramics, dabbled in oil painting, made wedding unity candles, sewed aprons, and crocheting baby blankets. She owned and operated the Victorian Tea Room in Breda.
Sheri’s middle name was Salome (peace) which was appropriate for her because she never met a person she couldn’t be friends with. Sheri’s generous nature is a good example by which we could live our lives.

Sheri is survived by her children: Bill (Sharon) Dirkx of Alleman, Jill (Steve) McCann of Grand Rapids, MI, Jeff (Ileana) Dirkx of Port Charlotte, FL, Jenny (Duane) Daby of West Des Moines, and Dan Dirkx of Carroll. She leaves 25 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren as well as her siblings Kay Reicks of Manson, Peggy (Don) Derner of Lake View, Jim (Ann) Clapper of Boston, MA, and Chuck Clapper of Lake View, along with extended family and friends.
Sheri was preceded in death by her husband, Fuzzy; her daughter Gina (Dave) Higbee, her parents Jack and Bunny Clapper, sisters: Nan Smart, Jo Bachman; and her brother Neil Clapper.
The family would also like to include a thank you to Jim Kennebeck for all his care of mom, Dr. Collision and the staff from St Anthony’s for all their care and comfort.

Obituary

Born March 31, 1930, he was the son of Bernard and Catherine (Rotert) Meiners. He grew up in the Dedham-Willey area and graduated from St. Mary’s School in Willey in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army July 8, 1953 and was stationed at Wurzburg, Germany. He was discharged on May 20, 1955.

Bernard married Dolores S. Halbur on January 24, 1956 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur. After being married Bernard and Dolores lived 3 miles north of Dedham for two years. In 1958, they moved to the farm they purchased four miles east of Dedham. They were the parents of six children: Daniel, Dale, David, Cathleen, Christine, and Gary. Dolores passed away January 21, 1978.

On August 9, 1980, Bernard married Marita Eickman at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. In May 2011, Bernard and Marita moved off the farm into the town of Coon Rapids, Iowa. They made their home there for 14 years. In April 2025, they moved to Parkview Assisted Living in Coon Rapids, Iowa.

During Bernard’s lifetime, he farmed, had a dairy operation, had a cow/calf operation, and raised hogs. He retired in 1992. He is a current member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Dedham, a member of the Dedham American Legion Post #20, and a member of the Manning VFW. In July 2001 Bernard, being a Korean Veteran, had the privilege to go on the Military Honor Flight to Washington DC. Just recently he was presented with a Quilt of Valor at Thomas Rest Haven, and at the age of 95 he still enjoyed attending the Legion meetings.

Bernard loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holiday gatherings were a treat for him to get to see most of them at one time. In his spare time Bernard enjoyed gathering black walnuts in the fall and kept busy shelling the walnuts during the winter. Family and friends benefited from the fruits of his labor.

Bernard is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marita Meiners; his children, Dale (Mary) Meiners of Carroll, David (Jane) Meiners of Varna, IL, Cathleen (Larry) Nees of Coon Rapids, Christine (Mark) Schultes of Dedham, and Gary (Barb) Meiners of Manson; 19 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren with 2 more coming in October; a brother Anthony (Colleen) Meiners of Carroll; 2 sisters, Catherine Wittrock of Carroll and Marcella Naberhaus of Carroll; his sisters-in-laws, Margaret (Tom) Denker of Manning, and Pat (Joe) Goblirsch of Jesup. He is also survived by Marita’s children, Richard (Sandy) Eickman of Omaha, NE, James (Joni) Eickman of Dyer, TN, Dave (Joan) Eickman of Macungie, PA, Randy (Rose) Eickman of Coon Rapids, Nancy Eickman and Jim Springer of Warren, NJ, and Karen Heck of Delano, MN, and many nieces and nephews.

Traveling home to Iowa will be different from now on- my first stop for so many years was to see Aunt Sheri where " the door is always open and beer/pop in the fridge". The times spent sitting with her at the kitchen table catching up on family news, events, and memories will never be forgotten. She was a great family historian and I always learned some new family history during those visits with her My daughters, Stephanie and Sheryl, thought their Aunt Sheri was " really cool " because they could walk out onto the roof and look out over Breda, then send their pop cans " down the chute". It's those little memories that will remain so special. We will miss her gracious hospitality, words of wisdom, and most of all her love. Continued thoughts and prayers for my Iowa family. Lois Reinhart Boes: I met Sherri when my husband Vernon and Fuzzy were drafted into the Marine Corps in 1951. What a fun couple as we dated during their furloughs as engaged couples. Sherri ,with her infectious smile, was always so loving and caring. We remained friends and kept in touch. Vernon Boes: Fuzzy and I were in boot camp together at San Diego during the Korean War; we and our wives saw each other through the years. Sherry helped me just this July to locate another former Marine buddy and I remember talking with her at my brother's (Father Marvin) funeral in Breda in July, cheerful and compassionate, as always. We wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family. Lois Reinhart Boes and Vernon Boes

I had only had the privilege of knowing Sheri for perhaps four years, but will remember her with warmth and affection for the remainder of my own years. She was one of those people to whom others naturally gravitate, always seeming to view the "glass as half full" even in times of adversity. Although I knew this amazing woman for too brief a time, she left an indelible mark on my heart, and I already miss her. I am a better person for having known her. My sympathy to all her loved ones.
