Sheila Burkett, 87, of Carroll, Iowa passed away Thursday, August 23rd, 2018 with her family at her side at St. Anthony’s Nursing Home, Carroll.

Sheila Josephine Dugan was born May 30, 1931 in Le Mars, Iowa to Harold and Josephine Dugan. Sheila graduated from Le Mars High School and was known as an accomplished bassoon player throughout high school. Following high school, she worked as a secretary for the school system and married Kenneth W. Burkett on June 16, 1952. Ken and Sheila built their own home (literally) in Le Mars, adopted four children; Clay Owen, Bryce Anne, Aura Lee, and Jacob Drew. Ken served in the U.S. Army for 23 years including service in Vietnam, and National Guard. Ken worked for Bowers Clothing in Le Mars. He became partner and opened a second clothing store- “Burkett’s”, which brought the family to Carroll, Iowa in 1974. The family attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Le Mars and then St. Lawrence parish in Carroll. Sheila was active in St. Lawrence parish, volunteered at Kuemper High School in the library, eventually working at the Carroll Health Center and doing charitable work in the community. One of her favorite events was coordinating all her girlfriends to donate items and make gift boxes for the elderly and county home residents every Christmas. Sheila donated and crocheted items every year for the elderly up until the time she entered the nursing home, herself.

Ken and Sheila lived several years in St. Joseph, Missouri following the sale of Burkett’s clothing in 1986. Sheila worked as an activity director at Carriage Square Health Care and a secretary for Lana’s Cleaning Service, while Ken worked as a suit specialist in St. Joseph, Mo. Sheila relocated back to Carroll, Iowa following Ken’s death in 1996 and then to Brentwood, California in 2016 prior to returning to St. Anthony’s nursing home in Carroll, Iowa – September, 2017.

Sheila enjoyed gardening, crocheting, volunteer work and spending time with her grandchildren and children. She has entertained area nursing homes for many years with her piano sing-a-longs, her famous laughter and smile- along with her love of everything IRISH!

Sheila was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Josephine Dugan; her husband, Kenneth; her brother, Allen Dugan of Denver, Colorado; sister, Thalia Herbert of Hyatsville, Maryland; and niece, Margaret Dugan of Denver, Colorado.

She is survived by her four children, Clay Burkett of Carroll, Iowa; Aura Lee Sibenaller of Carroll, Iowa and her husband Dean; Jake Burkett of St. Petersburg, Florida and his wife Cheryl, Bryce Custodio of Brentwood, California and her husband Dennish; 10 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; a niece, Valerie Hammond of Maryland; and nephew, John Dugan of California and 6 great nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be planned for Sheila in Le Mars, Iowa at a later date.

Arrangements are with the Sharp Funeral Home of Carroll and the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. Sheila will rest in peace with her husband Kenneth and parents Harold and Josephine Dugan in Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Le Mars, Iowa. Born March 31, 1930, he was the son of Bernard and Catherine (Rotert) Meiners. He grew up in the Dedham-Willey area and graduated from St. Mary’s School in Willey in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army July 8, 1953 and was stationed at Wurzburg, Germany. He was discharged on May 20, 1955.

Bernard married Dolores S. Halbur on January 24, 1956 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur. After being married Bernard and Dolores lived 3 miles north of Dedham for two years. In 1958, they moved to the farm they purchased four miles east of Dedham. They were the parents of six children: Daniel, Dale, David, Cathleen, Christine, and Gary. Dolores passed away January 21, 1978.

On August 9, 1980, Bernard married Marita Eickman at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. In May 2011, Bernard and Marita moved off the farm into the town of Coon Rapids, Iowa. Just recently he was presented with a Quilt of Valor at Thomas Rest Haven, and at the age of 95 he still enjoyed attending the Legion meetings.

Bernard loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holiday gatherings were a treat for him to get to see most of them at one time. In his spare time Bernard enjoyed gathering black walnuts in the fall and kept busy shelling the walnuts during the winter. Family and friends benefited from the fruits of his labor.

I have fond memories of Sheila and Ken and the entire Burkett family. Our Le Mars neighborhood was loaded with growing kids and Sheila was right in the middle of it all sharing her great sense of humor and wonderful laugh! From experience, I know how deep the pain of losing that final parent really goes. My deepest sympathy for your loss. Cherish those wonderful memories. Dave McCoy

I love you Auntie Mom. Thank you for everything. I know you're somewhere playing the piano and singing with Uncle Kenny, Mom, Uncle Allen and Grandma and Grandpa Dugan. ....MAY THE ROAD RISE UP TO MEET YOU. MAY THE WIND BE ALWAYS AT YOUR BACK. MAY THE SUN SHINE WARM UPON YOUR FACE AND UNTIL WE MEET AGAINMAY THE LORD HOLD YOU IN THE PALM OF HIS HAND.

Sheila Burkett was the kindest, most gentle lady, one could ever hope to meet! I recall her loving to play the piano for those at St. Anthony's Nursing Home, several years back, (when I was still in Nursing there), as Sheila's daughter, Aura Lee, directed an activity for all the resident's, as they all sang together, enjoying each and every moment! Sheila's ways, her smile, her friendliness, brightened everyones day! Sheila also enjoyed many hobbies. One hobby was crocheting beautiful "name" crochet items, that were usually placed in a large frame for wall hanging. My husband and I received a lovely framed crocheted framed name picture, Sheila had made just for us two; and she and Aura Lee gave us, a few years back, for wedding gift! We will always treasure that gift she made and Sheila's memory! Our deepest condolence to Aura Lee and all of Sheila's dear family! In Sympathy, Martin and Sharon (Zimmerman) PEARSON Sac City, Iowa

Aura Lee and Family, I have fond memories of Sheila from the time my dad, Louie Stork, was a resident at SANH. Sheila's piano playing and sing-a-longs added much joy to my dad's time in the nursing home. I am sure she is playing and singing with the angels now. Rest in peace.

I kept waiting to go to a gathering here in Carroll for Sheila. My dad, Karl Braun, and I sang in St. Joe’s choir in Le Mars with Ken when I was in grade school and many years later I reconnected with Sheila here at St. Lawrence. She always had a sweet smile and would tell me a story about my mom, Rose, who was as sweet and Irish as she was. May she enjoy the heavenly choir 🎼🍀🥀😇
