Rose Sondgeroth, age 90 of Carroll, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Andrew Hoffmann. Music will be by Paula Theulen and the Holy Spirit Celebration Choir. Mass servers will be: Corey Koster, Drew Kasperbauer, Colin Kasperbauer, and Connor Kasperbauer. Lectors for the funeral mass will be Amy Dunphy and Terry Kasperbauer. Gift Bearers will be Todd and Susan Dunphy and Dana Dunphy. Eucharistic Ministers will be: Paula Kasperbauer and Art Reicks. Honorary Casket Bearers will be: Linda Bluml, Sally Vonnahme, Paige Kasperbauer, Lori Wuebker, Shelly Tapps, Xander Kasperbauer, Nick Stevens, and Joni Brincks. Casket Bearers will be: Terry Kasperbauer, Tom Kasperbauer, Tim Kasperbauer, Todd Kasperbauer, Troy Kasperbauer, Colton Dunphy, Dennis Sondgeroth, and Tim Reicks. The members of the Foster Grandparent’s Program of Carroll County and the Carroll Catholic Daughters of Americas will form an honor guard for the funeral mass. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m. by the Carroll Catholic Daughters of Americas and a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. by Holy Spirit Parish.
The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church at 9 a.m. on Wednesday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass. Memorials may be left at the church or the funeral home for the Carroll Public Library or Holy Spirit Parish. Born on July 12, 1922 at Carroll, Iowa, Rose was the daughter of Otto and Rose (Hoffman) Kasperbauer. She grew up in Carroll and attended Sts. Peter and Paul School. On April 21, 1942 she married Alfred Sondgeroth at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Carroll. Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Carroll. In 1960 Rose & Al purchased the El Capitan Motel and moved to Creston. In 1970 when they moved back to Carroll they owned and operated the Blue Bird Grocery Store.
Rose was very active until the day of her illness and was working at the Carroll Public Library, a job she thoroughly enjoyed. This January she received the Everyday Hero Award. Throughout her lifetime she cleaned homes, worked for General Electric Plant for 13 years, Carroll Area Daycare Center, Daily Times Herald, Holy Spirit Elementary and Library where she worked with the Summer Reading Program. Most recently Rose was active with the Carroll County Foster Grandparent’s Program. Rose enjoyed playing cards but most of all enjoyed the time spent with her family. She was a member of Holy Spirit Parish, Carroll Catholic Daughters of Americas, and the Foster Grandparent’s Program of Carroll County.
Survivors include two daughters: Dorothy (Ron) Dunphy of Creston, and Alice (Bill) Brown of Carroll; one grandson, Todd (Susan) Dunphy of Creston; granddaughter-in-law, Dana Dunphy of Anthum, AZ; her great-grandchildren: Colton Dunphy, Austin Dunphy, Brian Dunphy, Henry Dunphy, and Amy Dunphy; one sister, Bette Bluml of Carroll; her sisters-in-law: Inez Kasperbauer of Carroll, Irma (Art) Reicks of Carroll, and Pat Sondgeroth of Carroll; her brothers-in-law: Jerry Schulte of Marshalltown and Jerry Steenson of Omaha; as well as many nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Alfred in July of 1973; infant daughter, Janice Rose; her grandson, Tom Dunphy; two brothers: Jack and Andy Kasperbauer; three sisters: Lucille Lasher, Loretta Venteicher, and Annie Kasperbauer; her sister-in-law, Jean Kasperbauer; and brothers-in-law: Otto Bluml, Duane Lasher, and Clarence Venteicher.
