Rev. Robert Maxwell Fangman, 92 of Carroll, died Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at Journey Senior Services in Carroll surrounded by his nephew, Nick Fangman’s family and the loving nurses and caregivers.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 31, 2019 at St. John Paul II Parish – Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Most Rev. R. Walker Nickless, Bishop of the Sioux City Diocese. Con-Celebrants will be Priests of the Sioux City Diocese. Music will be by Dr. Franklyn Busby, Pastoral Musician and the Holy Spirit Resurrection Choir. Lector for the funeral mass will be Dr. Nick Fangman. Gift Bearers will be Mary Roland and Ann Shelp. Casket Bearers will be: Dr. Nick Fangman, Steve Fangman, Matt Fangman, Charles Fangman, and Rod Roland. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.
Friends may call at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll after 4:30 p.m. on Friday where there will be a rosary at 5 p.m. by the Carroll Knights of Columbus and a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 p.m. Additional visitation will be held from 9:30-10:15 a.m. on Saturday at the church.

The son of Sylvester and Bernadette (Maxwell) Fangman, Robert Maxwell Fangman was born on September 26, 1926, in Omaha, Nebraska. He spent his younger years in the Boone Community, and graduated from Sacred Heart School. Prior to realizing the priest vocation, Bob served two years during World War II as a Navy Medic during which time her sustained his hearing loss.
Upon his honorable discharge, he furthered his education at Boone Junior College, Creighton University, and St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, Illinois. Fr. Robert Fangman was ordained on May 5, 1954 at Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City, Iowa.
Following his ordination he served as Assistant Pastor at St. Lawrence Parish in Carroll and Corpus Christi Parish in Ft. Dodge in addition to being on the faculty and administration at St. Edmond’s High School. While in Ft. Dodge, Fr. Bob also served as Chaplain for the Women’s Reformatory in Rockwell City. His additional Pastoral assignments included: St. Joseph Parish, Barnum, St. Mary Parish, Larchwood, St. Mary Parish, Lake City, Sacred Heart Parish, Manilla, and Annunciation Parish, Coon Rapids. Fr. Bob Fangman also served as Superintendent as Gehlen Catholic High School in Le Mars from 1964-1966.
Fr. Bob was an avid and loyal supporter of Iowa Hawkeye Athletics and rarely missed a game.
Survivors include his sister, Elizabeth (Fangman) Maulik and her husband Roger of St. Paul, MN as well many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
Fr. Robert Fangman was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Bernadette Fangman; his brothers: Dr. Charles Fangman, Fr. James Fangman, and Thomas Fangman, PhD; and his sister, Miriam (Fangman) Moderhock.
