Norman Pudenz, 87, of Carroll, died Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 17, 2014 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Mt. Carmel. The Celebrant will be Fr. Gary Snyder. Con-Celebrant and homilist will be Fr. Timothy Johnson. Music will be by Denise Nieland and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Choir. Lectors for the funeral mass will be Jamie Pudenz and Dan Lychwick. Gift Bearers will be Norman’s granddaughters: Caryn Barker, Beth Sullivan, Kenzie Kennebeck, Taryn Crees, Tessa Bernholtz, Tia Bernholtz, Summer Carlyle, and Hannah Pudenz. Eucharistic Minister will be Maria Shibata. Casket Bearers will be Norman’s grandsons: Casey Pudenz, Jared Pudenz, Calvin Pudenz, Jamie Pudenz, Matt Leonard, Marc Leonard, Cory Carlyle, and Chris Carlyle. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with military honors conducted by the Breda American Legion.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll, after 3 p.m. on Thursday, where there will be a Carroll Knights of Columbus Rosary at 4 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service by Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish at 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left at the funeral home or the church in Norman’s name and will be directed to various organizations of the family’s choice.

Born on April 3, 1926, Norman was the son of William and Teresa (Wiederin) Pudenz. He attended country school and then helped his family with their farm operation. On November 28, 1950 he was united in marriage to Betty Lou Fasbender at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Auburn, Iowa. Norman proudly served in the United States Army from 1951, to 1953, when he was honorably discharged. The couple made their home east of Mt. Carmel where Norman was engaged in grain and livestock farming. In 1994, Norman and Betty moved into the Carroll community.
He loved farming, playing cards, music, dancing, and attending sporting events. Norman was a past board member of the Carroll County Cattleman’s Association, volunteered with the Carroll R.S.V.P. group, and was also a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, Breda American Legion and the Carroll Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his children: Pat (Rich) Marshall of Omaha, NE, Cheryl (Dan) Lychwick of Fort Dodge, Diane “Pudy” Pudenz of Carroll, Marlene (Mike) Leonard of Carroll, Dean (Michelle “Chico”) Pudenz of Carroll, Larry (Paula) Pudenz of Auburn, Lynn Pudenz of Carroll, and Carol (Jeff) Bernholtz of Estherville; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Antonette Staiert of Sac City and Sally Carroll of Florida; his brother, Leon Pudenz of Carroll; and his in-laws: Ruth (David) Fitzgerald of Pennsylvania, Jean Daniel of Carroll, and Bob (Joleen) Fasbender of Carroll; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Betty Lou in 2004; his son Bill in 1986; his sister, Genevieve Staiert; and his brother Art Pudenz.
