Neil P. Schaefer, age 50, of Carroll, Iowa, and formerly of Breda, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at his residence near Carroll of an apparent heart condition. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at St. Bernard Church in Breda. The Celebrant will be Father Joe Dillinger. Lectors and Gift Bearers will be Alison Schroeder and Rebecca Schroeder. Eucharistic Ministers will be Gene Nieland, Mary Ann Naberhaus, and John Wittry. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jill Schaefer, Chad Schaefer, and Tim Schaefer. Casket Bearers will be John Schaefer, Leland Schaefer, Fay Ann Russell, Allen Schaefer, Josh Schaefer, and Joe Schaefer. Burial will be at St. Bernard Cemetery in Breda. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda after 2:30 P.M. Tuesday. A rosary will be prayed at 3 P.M. Tuesday. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Tuesday by St. Bernard Parish. Mr. Schaefer was born on January 1, 1959, at Carroll, Iowa, the son of Gerald and Reva (Galloway) Schaefer. He spent his younger years in the Breda community and graduated from St. Bernard High School in 1977 where he was a member of the 1975 St. Bernard High School State Champion baseball team. He had been employed by several businesses in the Carroll area, most notably the Pella Corporation for ten years. Mr. Schaefer enjoyed fishing, mowing his lawn, and the outdoors. Survivors include his brothers, John Schaefer and his wife Julie of Abilene, Texas, Leland Schaefer of Breda, Dale Schaefer and his wife Marcia of Odebolt, and Allen Schaefer and his wife Geraldine of Bossier City, Louisiana; two sisters, Fay Ann Russell and her husband Bill of Sawyer, Mich., and Jean Pottebaum and her husband Dale of Lompoc, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Kristy Schaefer of Omaha, Nebr.; fifteen nieces and nephews; and fourteen great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Mike Schaefer; and a nephew, Billy Pottebaum.
