Born on April 27, 1920 in Deuel County, South Dakota, Myrtle was the daughter of Carl and Edith (Andersen) Gustafson. She grew up in South Dakota, and moved to the Carroll area at a young age. Myrtle met Arthur Goecke, and on April 3, 1940 the couple were married at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. The couple made their home on several farms between Mt. Carmel and Breda. In 1959 they purchased the Mt. Carmel Locker, and operated it until 1964. Myrtle then worked for Pepsi-Cola in Carroll until her retirement in 1985.
Myrtle enjoyed needlework, and watching college basketball on television. Her favorite teams to watch were the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and Duke University. She enjoyed water aerobics at the Carroll Recreation Center, something she did for over 27 years. Most of all Myrtle enjoyed her family, and traveling to see them when she was able to. She was a member of the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary, and Holy Spirit Parish.
