Melvin Petersen, age 85, of Glidden, Iowa, died Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, January 16, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden. The Celebrant will be Father Anthony Pick assisted by Deacon Gary Schon. Lector will be Laurie Sporrer. Gift Bearers will be Rita Haberl, Marilyn Roeder, Susan Sporrer, and Shirley Eischeid. Eucharistic Ministers will be Joleen and Leo Kasparbauer. Casket Bearers will be Greg Sporrer, Terry Roeder, Ken Meiners, Dale Eischeid, Rick Roeder, and Cory Sporrer. Burial will be at Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery in Glidden.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 2:30 P.M. Friday. A rosary will be prayed at 3 P.M. Friday. There will be a Christian wake service at 5 P.M. Friday by St. Elizabeth Seton Parish.
Mr. Petersen was born on December 18, 1924, at Westside, Iowa, the son of Emil and Caroline (Kuhl) Petersen. He spent his younger years in the Westside community and attended country school. On January 27, 1948, he was married to Floreine Bierl at St. Francis Church in Maple River. The couple farmed in the Westside, Dow City, and Dedham areas and in 1962 moved to Carroll. In 1964 the Petersen’s moved to Glidden. Melvin was a truck driver for the Glidden Coop and Boomsma Egg Company in Glidden and also drove truck for the F. & H. Food Company of Carroll. In later years he drove a school bus for the Glidden-Ralston Community Schools. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Parish and the Loyal Order of Moose. Melvin enjoyed his family, fishing, traveling, woodworking, bowling, and Chicago Cubs baseball.
Survivors include his children, Bob Petersen and his wife Cheryl of Des Moines, Patti McKinney and her husband Dan of Montevallo, Alabama, Michael Petersen of Des Moines, Judith Ann Young and her husband Robbie of Delta Junction, Alaska, and Peter Petersen and his wife Roxanne of Virginia Beach, Virginia; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; a brother, Andrew Petersen and his wife Beverly of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and a sister, Eunice Harding of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Floreine Petersen, in July 2005; and a son, Paul Peter Petersen.
