On October 27, 1925 Matthew John Neppel was born to Max and Rose Neppel in a little farmhouse not far from Willey, Iowa. Matt was five of seven children and would often talk about growing up on the farm and he loved reminiscing and telling stories about his life.
At age twenty, Matt was drafted and proud to have served in the United States Army.
Matt and the love of his life, Lois Hamers Neppel, were married on September 13, 1947 at St. Peter & Paul Church. Matt and Lois had eight children together Craig (Joanie), Vicki (Ned), Cathy, Becky (Pat), Ron (Karen), Scott (Cathy), Lisa (Marty), and Lori who all contributed to a full head of gray hair and sleepless nights.

Matt became an extremely successful oil jobber in 1956 and developed his business which came to be known as Neppel Oil Co. He had an unparalleled work ethic until the day that he retired in 1993. There were many “take your grandchildren to work days” at the station where Matt would put his grandchildren (and adult children) to work and repay them in Pepsi Cola and candy from behind the counter.

In retirement, Matt would often be seen golfing, having coffee with his buddies, playing cards at the Moose Lodge, taking trips, and spending time with family. He was immensely proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and spent as much time as he could with them from teaching them to drive in the cornfields, fishing at Swan Lake, beating them at Euchre, and even allowing them to occasionally paint his toenails.

Matt was called home and reunited with his Euchre partner after cashing in his quarters of a life well-lived on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at the Swan Place in Carroll. Every day with Matt was a day to remember and he will be greatly missed. Matt was a member of the Carroll American Legion and St. Lawrence Church in Carroll.

Matt is survived by his children: Craig (Joanie) Neppel of Coralville, Vicki (Ned) Dean of Ava Maria, FL, Cathy Neppel of Minneapolis, MN, Becky (Pat) Arts of Omaha, NE, Ron (Karen) Neppel of Olathe, KS, Scott (Cathy) Neppel of Omaha, NE, and Lisa (Marty) Danzer of Carroll; 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; his sisters Arlene Dalhoff and Agnes Stoolman, both of Carroll; and his sister-in-law Orsola Neppel of New Jersey; as well as other extended relatives and many friends.

Matt is preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Lois Neppel; his daughter, Lori Eischeid; and his siblings: Arby Neppel, Ralph Neppel, Melvin Neppel, and Isabelle Feld.

Obituary

Born March 31, 1930, he was the son of Bernard and Catherine (Rotert) Meiners. He grew up in the Dedham-Willey area and graduated from St. Mary’s School in Willey in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army July 8, 1953 and was stationed at Wurzburg, Germany. He was discharged on May 20, 1955.

Bernard married Dolores S. Halbur on January 24, 1956 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur. After being married Bernard and Dolores lived 3 miles north of Dedham for two years. In 1958, they moved to the farm they purchased four miles east of Dedham. They were the parents of six children: Daniel, Dale, David, Cathleen, Christine, and Gary. Dolores passed away January 21, 1978.

On August 9, 1980, Bernard married Marita Eickman at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. In May 2011, Bernard and Marita moved off the farm into the town of Coon Rapids, Iowa. They made their home there for 14 years. In April 2025, they moved to Parkview Assisted Living in Coon Rapids, Iowa.

During Bernard’s lifetime, he farmed, had a dairy operation, had a cow/calf operation, and raised hogs. He retired in 1992. He is a current member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Dedham, a member of the Dedham American Legion Post #20, and a member of the Manning VFW. In July 2001 Bernard, being a Korean Veteran, had the privilege to go on the Military Honor Flight to Washington DC. Just recently he was presented with a Quilt of Valor at Thomas Rest Haven, and at the age of 95 he still enjoyed attending the Legion meetings.

Bernard loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holiday gatherings were a treat for him to get to see most of them at one time. In his spare time Bernard enjoyed gathering black walnuts in the fall and kept busy shelling the walnuts during the winter. Family and friends benefited from the fruits of his labor.

Bernard is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marita Meiners; his children, Dale (Mary) Meiners of Carroll, David (Jane) Meiners of Varna, IL, Cathleen (Larry) Nees of Coon Rapids, Christine (Mark) Schultes of Dedham, and Gary (Barb) Meiners of Manson; 19 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren with 2 more coming in October; a brother Anthony (Colleen) Meiners of Carroll; 2 sisters, Catherine Wittrock of Carroll and Marcella Naberhaus of Carroll; his sisters-in-laws, Margaret (Tom) Denker of Manning, and Pat (Joe) Goblirsch of Jesup. He is also survived by Marita’s children, Richard (Sandy) Eickman of Omaha, NE, James (Joni) Eickman of Dyer, TN, Dave (Joan) Eickman of Macungie, PA, Randy (Rose) Eickman of Coon Rapids, Nancy Eickman and Jim Springer of Warren, NJ, and Karen Heck of Delano, MN, and many nieces and nephews.

Bernard was preceded in death by his first wife Dolores S. Meiners; a son Daniel J. Meiners; Marita’s son Bill Eickman; his parents Bernard and Catherine Meiners; his brothers John (Margaret) Meiners, Albert (Frances) Meiners; his brothers-in-law Clarence Wittrock, Norbert Naberhaus, Cletus (Emaline) Halbur, Norman (Inez) Halbur, Larry (JoAnn) Halbur; his brother-in-law, William (Marie) Halbur; Dolores’ parents, William and Frances Halbur, and stepmother-in-law, Josephine Halbur.

Matt set Ron and I up to play golf at the Carroll Country Club. Not only did he set it all up and pay for the golf, he had a cooler full of beer loaded on the cart. Ron and I probably didn't drink the beer, but it was an a awesome day. Randy Schneider

Becky and all the family, So sorry to hear of your Father's death; I have wonderful memories of Matt and Lois from our childhood, we always had a good time at your house, which was very child centered with the tandem bike and trampoline to keep us busy. Years later, when I detasseled with Becky one summer, Matt and Lois often met us at the end of day in the field. They had warm smiles and ice-cold drinks! Rest in peace, Matt, and wishing all the family comfort and peace. Ann O'Leary Grossman

To all Matt and Lois’s family, my cousins, I have great memories of riding bikes with the Dalhoffs to your house. We spent hours on the trampoline! Then somewhere along the line we’d end up at the station and Matt would treat us to a soda pop and Payday candy bar and maybe one for the road back to Iowa City. I can remember Ralph and Matt playing cards for hours and drinking beer and laughing so hard ! Matt would pull his chest hair and try to plant some on mine! What fond memories... I hope all of your memories give you comfort during this sad time. Our deepest sympathies to you. Love, Gail Neppel O’Donnell
