Matt Schultes

Matthew Leonard Schultes, age 65, of Johnston, Iowa and formerly of Willey, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines surrounded by loved ones. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Willey. The Celebrant will be Father Craig Collison. Music will be provided by Jane Heithoff and church members. The Gift Bearers are Nora and Jack Schultes. The Lector is Tyler Schultes. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery with military honors by the Dedham American Legion. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll, with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday at the church. Matt was born October 13, 1960, to Leon and Maxine (Wieland) Schultes in Willey. He grew up on the family farm outside of Willey and graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School in 1979. Following graduation, he traveled across the country with a friend and eventually enlisted in the US Army where he was a mechanic & continued to develop skills that later defined much of his life. Matt was integral within the development of the early biodiesel industry, including work at the Renewable Energy Group (REG) facility in Ralston, Iowa, where REG’s roots began in the biodiesel division of West Central Cooperative. He later traveled across the United States helping start up 10+ biodiesel plants and sharing his knowledge with others. On July 20, 2002, Matt was united in marriage to the love of his life, Marilyn Klocke. Together they traveled the world, golfed as often as possible, and made friends everywhere they went. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Marilyn; son Nick (Abby); his 3 grandchildren: Nora, Jack, and Ella, all of Carroll; siblings: Mike (Nancy) Schultes of Carroll; Margaret Stamps of Odessa, TX; Tom (Karen) Schultes of Granger; Alan (Cheryl) Schultes of Dedham; Gene (Bev) Schultes of Carroll; Joanie (Steve) Baumhover of Dedham; Jim Schultes of Dedham; and Dawn (Shawn) Reynolds, of Alleman; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Janice Reineke, Council Bluffs; Dale (Mary) Klocke and Kenny Klocke, all of Carroll; Denise (Maury) Brincks, of Appleton, WI; Sue and Randy Clausen, of Audubon; Gene (Chris) Klocke, of Carroll; and Daryl (Cheryl) Klocke, of Dedham; and many nieces, nephews & friends. Matt was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws Leonard and Leona Klocke; and brothers-in-law: Allen Klocke, Ray Reineke, and Jerry Stamps.
