Mary was born on May 30, 1934, in Omaha, Nebraska to Edward and Bernice (O’Brien) Hanlon.
She attended St. Agnes grade school in South Omaha. She went on to St. Mary’s High School and graduated in 1952. Her early years were marked by visits to the bakery across the street, downtown shopping trips with her mother, going to movies and to the library with her older brother, and other adventures around the city with her beloved aunts and uncles. She developed a deep love of music at an early age and went on to excel as a singer in high school and beyond. She continued to sing for weddings of family and friends for many years.

After high school, Mary entered St. Catherine School of Nursing, Creighton University, graduating as an RN in 1955. While in nurses’ training, she was introduced by a good friend to Donald Tigges, from Carroll, IA, and they were married at St. John’s Church at Creighton University on November 19, 1955. They moved to a farm north of Willey, IA. While building their life together on the farm, Mary’s devotion to nursing continued to be a focal point. In addition to working as a school nurse for many years, her life was centered around their four children, their family, both nearby and in Omaha, her Catholic faith, and her many, many deep and lasting friendships.

Mary and Don eventually moved to Carroll and she continued to work as a nurse at Farmland in Denison until 1996. In retirement, she utilized her flair for style by working at Mimi’s, a clothing boutique in Carroll. She was an avid reader, politically involved, and she and Don also enjoyed traveling and attending their grandkids’ many musical and sporting events. Mary’s nursing skills were lovingly offered while caring for Don for a number of years before he entered the nursing home. Even after she joined him there, the nurses appreciated her willingness to give them a hand with various tasks. The Tigges family could not be more grateful to the nurses who cared for both Mary and Don. Mary’s Irish eyes, forever smiling, and her heart, forever singing, will lift our spirits whenever we think of her.

Mary is survived by: her four children, Brian Tigges and his wife Michelle(Rupiper) of Johnston, Marty Tigges of Arcadia, Kristie Tigges, of Minneapolis, MN, and Anne Tigges of Carroll; two grandchildren, Tyler Tigges and his wife Meaghan of Urbandale, and Rachel Tigges of New York, NY; four great- granddaughters, Mairin, Sloane, Camryn, and Quinn Tigges; her sisters-in-law, Ruth Ann Tigges of Carroll, Carolyn Sovich of Ormond Beach, FL, Mary Jane (Morrie) Schenkelberg of Sioux City, Rosalie (Jon) Davis of Reed Springs, MO, Mary K. Tigges, of Carroll, and Velma Tigges of Carroll and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was very recently preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Don. Also preceding her were her parents, Bernice and Edward Hanlon, brother Edward Hanlon, sister-in-law Alyce Hanlon, father and mother-in-law Alphonse and Elizabeth Tigges, and brothers-in-law Walt Tigges, Jerry Tigges, and Frank Sovich.

Obituary

Born March 31, 1930, he was the son of Bernard and Catherine (Rotert) Meiners. He grew up in the Dedham-Willey area and graduated from St. Mary’s School in Willey in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army July 8, 1953 and was stationed at Wurzburg, Germany. He was discharged on May 20, 1955.

Bernard married Dolores S. Halbur on January 24, 1956 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur. After being married Bernard and Dolores lived 3 miles north of Dedham for two years. In 1958, they moved to the farm they purchased four miles east of Dedham. They were the parents of six children: Daniel, Dale, David, Cathleen, Christine, and Gary. Dolores passed away January 21, 1978.

On August 9, 1980, Bernard married Marita Eickman at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. In May 2011, Bernard and Marita moved off the farm into the town of Coon Rapids, Iowa. They made their home there for 14 years. In April 2025, they moved to Parkview Assisted Living in Coon Rapids, Iowa.

In July 2001 Bernard, being a Korean Veteran, had the privilege to go on the Military Honor Flight to Washington DC. Just recently he was presented with a Quilt of Valor at Thomas Rest Haven, and at the age of 95 he still enjoyed attending the Legion meetings.

Bernard loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holiday gatherings were a treat for him to get to see most of them at one time. In his spare time Bernard enjoyed gathering black walnuts in the fall and kept busy shelling the walnuts during the winter. Family and friends benefited from the fruits of his labor.

It’s hard to put into words how sad I am my Aunt & Godmother Mary Tigges has passed on. I guess since Uncle Don passed away, she felt she needed to be with him; to continue to care for him. Brian, Marty, Kristie, and Anne I am sorry for the loss of both your parents in such a short time. And I am so, so sorry Norah and I will not be able to attend the service. I was so fortunate to have such a loving and caring person as an Aunt. Ever since I was a small child, Mary was always so willing to come to Omaha for all of my family’s big events. She was there for almost every baptism, birthday, graduation and wedding. She would even make the drive for sports, school concerts, and theater productions. I could always expect a birthday card from her! Those cards have meant so much to me. Going to Carroll has always been a treat for my siblings and me. As each of us married, our spouses, children and grandkids have always looked forward to the trip to visit with Mary, Don and all our cousins for the weekend! They were always so willing to open their home to us. There are so many fun memories they made possible, from spending time on Uncle Don’s farm to the many Thanksgivings and especially family reunions on Labor Day. I will always remember Mary’s beautiful smile, kind words, amazing singing voice. Although Mary is no longer with us, she will always have a special place in my heart. Love you Aunt Mary! Ed Hanlon
