Mary Leiting, age 97, of Carroll, Iowa, formerly of Maple River, died Friday, September 17, 2010 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Johnson. Lector will be Rachel Potthoff. Gift Bearers will be Mary’s daughters. Eucharistic Ministers will be Lenora Gross and Alan Lemker. Honorary Pallbearers will be Mary’s granddaughters. Casket Bearers will be Richard Kanne, Marcus Drees, Michael Leahy, Dan Leahy, Patrick Leahy, Tim Leahy, Nason Kloppenborg, and Tom Potthoff. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery at Maple River.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday where there will be a rosary prayed a 4 p.m., followed by a Christian Wake Service by Holy Spirit parish at 7 p.m. The casket will be taken to the church at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning to lie in state until time of the funeral mass.
Mary was born on July 24, 1913 at Maple River, Iowa the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Meyer) Kramer. She was raised in the Maple River area and attended St. Francis Schools. On April 3, 1934 she married Lawrence “Shorty” Leiting at St. Francis Church in Maple River. The couple spent their entire lifetime in the Maple River community, where Mary was active in the St. Francis Parish, Parish Ladies Guild, and the Parish Choir. Mary was a resident at Orchard View and the Swan House before going to St. Anthony Nursing. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, crocheting, knitting, playing cards, playing bingo and especially her family.
Survivors include her daughters: Ruth Drees and her husband Dean of Manning, Mary Lou Leahy of Portland, OR, Betty Galetich of Cedar Park, TX, and LaVonne Sholes and her husband Leonard of Marion, IA; 15 Grandchildren; 23 Great-Grandchilren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lawrence, in July 1995; daughter, Johanna Leiting in infancy; sons-in-law: Joseph Kanne and John Leahy; great grandson; Brandon Scott Johnston; brother, Henry Kramer; and half sister, Loretta Schirck
