Marie Soppe, age 85, of Carroll, Iowa, died Sunday evening, February 8, 2009, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, February 12, 2009, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Schott. The Carroll Catholic Daughters of America will form an honor guard for the funeral mass. Lector will be Angela Olsen. Gift Bearers will be grandchildren, Jean Werner, Tonya Edwards, Angie TeBeest, Jennifer Soppe, Ashley Schultes, Kenna Soppe, and Carter Soppe. Mass Servers will be Jacie Hoffman, Carly Hoffman, and Aly Schreck. Eucharistic Ministers will be Lorraine Danner, Marilyn Foley, and Dennis Schleisman. Casket Bearers will be grandsons, Jeff Menke, Dennis Menke, Shawn Olsen, Chad Olsen, Leon Schultes, and Mitch Schultes. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 2:30 P.M. Wednesday. A rosary will be prayed at 3 P.M. Wednesday by the Carroll Catholic Daughters of America. There will be a Christian wake service at 6 P.M. Wednesday by St. Lawrence Parish. Mrs. Soppe was born on September 12, 1923, at Butte, Nebraska, the daughter of Edward and Cecelia (Schnitter) Lechtenberg. At a young age her family moved to the Manning community where she attended rural school. On June 21, 1942, she was married to Andrew Soppe at Templeton, Iowa. Following their marriage the couple farmed near Templeton and in 1965 they moved to Carroll. Mrs. Soppe was employed in the Dietary Kitchen at St. Anthony Regional Hospital from 1970 until her retirement in 1997. She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, Parish Ladies Guild, Catholic Daughters of America, and the St. Anthony Golden Girls. She enjoyed her family, playing cards, and traveling. Survivors include two daughters, Jean Soppe of Gretna, Nebr., and Cheryl Schultes and her husband Alan of Willey; two sons, Don Soppe and his wife Sue of Platteville, Wisc., and Dr. Mike Soppe and his wife Pat of Carroll; a son-in-law, Donald Menke of Macon, Missouri; thirteen grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and sisters, Leona Riesberg of Halbur, Loretta Handlos of Manning, and Mildred Mallet and her husband Fred of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Andrew Soppe in December 1991; two daughters, Donna Mae Soppe and Betty Menke; a brother, Fred Lechtenberg, in infancy; and two brothers-in-law, Irvin Riesberg and Albert Handlos.
