Born on June 1, 1921, near Breda, Iowa, Louis was the son of Ben and Agnes (Grote) Stork. He grew up on the family farm south of Breda and graduated from St. Bernard’s High School in 1939. After high school Louis helped his father with the farming operation. On September 22, 1942, he was inducted into the United States Army where he served in North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany during World War II. He was honorably discharged on October 29, 1945. Louis then returned home and took over the farming duties. On January 15, 1955, he was united in marriage to Lois Jean Traner at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Carroll. The couple made their home south of Breda, where Louis continued to farm. In 1992 he retired and moved to the Carroll community.
Louie was always very proud of his family. He was very interested in history and in his later years enjoyed learning more about the Stork/Grote genealogy. He also enjoyed helping students with projects that allowed him to teach them about WWII. He had a love of music. He enjoyed singing in the church choir and spent many hours in the last years of his life listening to Christmas songs, sacred music, polkas, and German songs. Louie belonged to a couple’s bridge club for over forty years. He also enjoyed bank-sponsored bus trips, winter trips to Texas, and rides around Swan Lake. He enjoyed parties and often entertained the crowd with his jokes and witticism.
Louie was active in many organizations over the years. Louie was influential in the formation of the Carroll Area Ostomy Association. He served as the Chief Ranger of the Breda Catholic Order of Foresters, State Trustee of the Catholic Order of Foresters, past commander of the Breda American Legion, former member of the Board of Directors for the Breda Telephone Company, past chairman of the Carroll County A.S.C.S. Committee, and former lector and parish director of St. Bernard’s Parish in Breda. Louie was also active with the Carroll R.S.V.P. and the Carroll Relay for Life.
Left to celebrate Louis’s life are his children: Suzanne (Mark) Samuelson of Omaha, NE, Diane (Glen) Smith of Curlew, Jim (Nicole) Stork of La Grange, IL, Larry (Karla) Stork of Breda, and Michael (Michelle) Stork of Chanhassen, MN; 14 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; his sister, Rita Wolterman of Adams, MN; his sister-in-law Margaret Powers of Jefferson; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.
Louis was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois in 1992; a son in infancy; and his sisters: Elizabeth Stork and Marie Wunschel.
