Louis Grossman, age 86, of Carroll, Iowa, died early Thursday, February 25, 2010, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 A.M., Monday, March 1, 2010, at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Celebrant and Homilist will be Father James Tigges. Con-celebrant will be Father Timothy Johnson. Lectors will be sons, Mark Grossman and Mike Grossman. Gift Bearers will be sons, Gary Grossman and Joe Grossman. Mass Servers will be Jason Grossman and Chris Grossman. Eucharistic Ministers will be a daughter, Mickey Snyder, and a son, John Grossman. Honorary Pallbearers will be Mr. Grossman’s grandchildren. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 5 P.M. Sunday. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Sunday by Holy Spirit Parish. Visitation will resume at 9 A.M. Monday at Holy Spirit Church.
Mr. Grossman was born on April 13, 1923, on the family farm near Willey, Iowa, the son Bernard and Mary (Berger) Grossman. He graduated from St. Mary School at Willey and then helped his family on the farm. He entered the U.S. Army in May 1945 and served overseas during World War II with the 485th Medical Collecting Company in France and Germany. He was honorably discharged in November 1946. On February 11, 1947, he was married to Marian Klocke at St. Joseph Church in Dedham, Iowa. The couple farmed near Willey until 1964 when the family moved to Carroll. Mr. Grossman then attended an Auto Body Repair School in Sioux City and was employed by McCoy Motors and Whaley Chevrolet in Carroll and Macke Motors in Lake City. He was later employed by the Farmland Foods Company in Carroll until his retirement. In retirement Louie worked part time for the HyVee Grocery Store and New Hope Village. He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish and Carroll American Legion. Louie enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, playing baseball, and watching television.
Survivors include his wife, Marian Grossman of Carroll; his children, Lou Ann Mowrey and husband Ron of Carroll, Gary Grossman of Chicago, Ill., Mary “Mickey” Snyder and husband Barry of Glidden, Mark Grossman and wife Lynne of Waukee, Joan Halbur and husband Roger of Carroll, Joyce “Fred” Wittrock and husband Jim of Carroll, John Grossman and wife Joan of Carroll, Betty Appleby and husband Mark of Ft. Myers, Florida, Joe Grossman and wife Sue of Albert Lea, Minn., Mike Grossman and wife Barb of Windsor Heights, and Lori Christoffersen of Carroll; a son-in-law, Jim Bayliss and wife Linda of Eden Prairie, Minn.; his grandchildren, Jerry Mowrey, Bob Mowrey, Dusty Stork, Mandy Halbur, Bobbie Sue Onken, Sarah Mowrey, Trisha Biederman, Jeff Grossman, Torrey Grossman, Garrett Grossman, Trent Grossman, Heidi Ball, Brandy Snyder, Chris Bayliss, Carrie Cavazos, Jason Grossman, Joe Grossman, Ben Halbur, John Halbur, Leann Halbur, Tony Wittrock, Tina Hacker, Jennifer Poggio, Mike Grossman, Nick Grossman, Ashton Appleby, Aaron Appleby, Louie Grossman, Luke Grossman, Emma Grossman, Anna Grossman, Megan Grossman, Nate Grossman, Zach Grossman, Jacob Christoffersen, and Rachel Christoffersen; 25 great grandchildren; his siblings, Marie Thielen of Carroll, Bob Grossman and wife Lorena of Willey, Freda Tigges and husband Joe of Dedham, Imelda Kerkhoff and husband Meryl of Manning, Delores Greenwood and husband Jim of Cottage Grove, Minn., and Marilyn Heithoff and husband Wayne of Urbandale; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward Tigges of Willey, Lawrence and Beth Klocke of Carroll, Alvin and Loanna Klocke of Austin, Minn., Joan Hoffmeier of Council Bluffs, Betty and Nick LaVan of Dresser, Wisc., Lois and Bob Sellers of Indianapolis, Ind., Diane and George Sonderman of Earling, Carlene and Larry Goecke of Clermont, Florida, Harold Leiting of Carroll, Norbert Sturm of Carroll, and Jack Irlmeier of Kearney, Nebraska.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Donna Bayliss, in September 1983; three sisters, Lucy Anna Grossman at five days of age in 1922, Helen Thielen, and Rita Tigges; a brother, Andrew M. Grossman at 29 days of age in 1933; a great grandson, Jasper Dopheide; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ambrose and Margaret Klocke; brothers-in-law, Bill Thielen, Charles Thielen, and Dale Hoffmeier; and sisters-in-law, Delores Leiting, Marjorie Sturm, and Vernie Irlmeier.
