Lorraine Schultes, 96, of Dedham, passed away on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at HallMar Village in Cedar Rapids.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Church in Dedham. The Celebrant will be Father Stan Mader assisted by Deacon Louie Meiners. Music will be by Cindy Bauer and the St. Joseph’s Choir. Justin Schultes and John Schultes will serve as Lectors. Gift Bearers and Casket Bearers will be Lorraine’s grandchildren. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 pm to 7 pm on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll with a prayer service at 7 pm. The casket will be moved to the church for additional visitation on Thursday morning from 9:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations which will be directed to causes dear to Lorraine. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for Lorraine’s family at www.sharpfuneral.com.
Lorraine Helen, daughter of Joseph and Rose (Heithoff) Kitt, was born April 15, 1929, at Templeton, Iowa. She grew up near Dedham and attended country school near her home before going to St. Joseph’s School and then St. Angela’s Academy for one year. Lorraine helped on the farm until her marriage to George Schultes on February 16, 1949, at St. Joseph’s Church in Dedham. Eight children were born to this couple. Lorraine and George farmed south of Dedham until 1982 when they retired and moved into Dedham. In 1999, they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. George passed away in 2000, and Lorraine continued to live in their home in Dedham until 2017 when she moved to Cedar Rapids.
Lorraine was an active member of St. Joseph’s Church. While on the farm, she kept busy raising chickens, tending to her garden, and sewing and mending. Throughout her life, Lorraine enjoyed visiting the library, reading, playing cards at card club, watching nature shows on PBS, eating candy (especially chocolate) and drinking decaf coffee. Lorraine and her son Glenn with wife Michelle enjoyed traveling including Alaska, Mexico, Vermont, and Wisconsin cabin. A family-oriented mom, Lorraine loved visiting her children, attending family weddings, organizing family photo albums and recording family history.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and the following in-laws: Marcella and Louis Brincks, Albin and Rosalia Schultes, Lawrence and Margie Schultes, George and Mary Margaret Mader, and Leonard Schultes.
Survivors include eight children: Dr. Robert (Carole) Schultes of Cedar Rapids; Rick (Roz) Schultes of Templeton; Ken Schultes of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Janice Lehrkamp of Des Moines; Dan (Pam) Schultes of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; Dr. Glenn Schultes and wife Michelle Bjerke of Bend, Oregon; Nancy Geiger of Cedar Rapids; Kris Smole of Boston, Massachusetts; 11 grandchildren: John Schultes, Sam (Kristina) Schultes, Nora (John) Swift, Justin (Katie) Schultes, Kayla Schultes, Angie (Nic) Culp, Josh (Bri) Lehrkamp, Brian (Jessica) Schultes, Allison (Chris) Hutchison, Jennifer (Todd) Lahey and Amaya Smole; and 19 Great-grandchildren: Khrystiannah, Luke, Leo, Paige, Quinn, Summer, Colin, Grace, Lillie, Talon, Will, Bryce, Owen, Eli, Lydia, Paxton, Julia, Grayson and Conner; and by many nieces and nephews.
Lorraine’s family would like to extend their appreciation to Mercy HallMar of Cedar Rapids and Hospice of Mercy for the wonderful care given to Lorraine. Staff and residents will miss her smile and gentle joking.
