Lester Ohde, age 92, of Carroll, died Thursday morning, December 23, 2010 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Schott. Lector will be Lynn Wittrock. Gift Bearers will be Lester’s grandsons: Chase and Kyle Ohde. Eucharistic Ministers will be Urban and Jean Knobbe. Musicians will be Marcy Anderson and Tyler Badding. Casket Bearers will be: Fred Irlbeck, Lynn Phillips, Todd Johnson, Gregg Johnson, Bob Haukap, Carter Haukap, Nelson Haukap and Wyatt Haukap. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Manning American Legion and the Manning VFW.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 2:30 p.m., Tuesday where there will be a rosary at 3 p.m., followed by a Christian Wake service by St. Lawrence Parish at 6 p.m.
Memorials may be left at the funeral home or the church for St. Anthony Hospice.
Born on August 21, 1918 at Manning, Iowa, Lester L. Ohde was the son of George and Anna (Georgius) Ohde. Lester spent his younger years attending school and farming in the Hayes Township Community. Lester entered the Army Air Corps on August 19, 1941 and served in World War II in the Philippines. On May 14, 1946 he married Ann Sturm at St. Bernard Church in Breda, Iowa. His brother’s band, the Harmony Boys played at their wedding dance. The couple farmed the family farm in the Manning area until 1986 when they moved to their home in Carroll. Lester and Ann celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary together in May of 2006. Mr. Ohde was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed farming, golf, polka festivals in New Ulm, Minnesota, and spending time with his family. He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, Manning VFW Post # 3517 and the Manning American Legion, Emil Ewoldt Post # 22.
Survivors include his children: Dennis Ohde and his wife Joyce of Lake Ozark, MO, Darrell Ohde and his wife Gerri of West Des Moines, Beverly Wilmers and her husband John of Omaha, NE, and Mark Ohde and his wife Kathe of Omaha, NE; 7 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; one sister, Jean Pfoltner of Lincoln, NE; sisters-in-law: Lorraine Ebersole of Carroll, Deloris Sturm of Carroll, Elizabeth Sturm of Carroll, and Lois Sturm of Breda, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Ann in August 2006; five brothers: Oliver, Raymond, Melvin, Wesley, and Oscar Ohde in infancy; one sister, Viola Martens; sisters-in-law: Mabel Ohde, Margaret Ohde, Evelyn Ohde, and Delores Ohde; brothers-in-law: George Pfoltner and Gilbert Martens.
