Leone Balk, 91 of Carroll, died Saturday, November 19, 2011 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 26, 2011 at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Johnson. Mass Servers will be Nathan Grote and Leone’s great-grandchildren: Nick Callahan, and Joey Farrington. Pianist for the funeral mass will be Marcy Anderson. Vocalist will be Leone’s daughter, Mari Balk, and Leone’s grandson, Marc Schapman. Lectors will be Leone’s granddaughters: Rachel Wilson, Sheri French, and Jill Farrington. Gift Bearers will be Leone’s granddaughters: Colleen Hoehn, Hillary Balk, Kim Sadegi, and Jenny Callahan. Eucharistic Ministers will be Leone’s son Bob Balk and his wife Sharon, and Leone’s son-in-law, Tom Schapman. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Leone’s granddaughters: Annie Williams, Amy Weber, Calina Saucedo, Sarah Balk, Katie Williams, Melanie Ellison, and Ruthe Balk. Casket Bearers will be Leone’s grandsons: Eric Osterhaus, Tom Schapman Jr., John Schapman, Andy Balk IV, John Balk, John Hall, Jeff Hall, Danny Balk, Josh Balk, and Michael Spence. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 p.m., Friday where there will be a rosary prayed at 4 p.m., followed by a Christian Wake Service by the parish at 6:30 p.m. The casket will be taken to Holy Spirit Church at 9 a.m., Saturday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass.

Born on May 18, 1920 at Carroll, Iowa, Leone was the daughter of Jacob and Antonia (Schlichter) Kuker. She spent her entire life time in the Carroll Community and attended Sts. Peter and Paul School, later attending beauty school in Omaha. Leone returned to Carroll and was employed at Laurette Anderson’s beauty shop. On June 24, 1940 she married Andy Balk Jr. at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Carroll by Fr. Lambert Schenkelberg. Following their marriage they made their home in Carroll and raised their six children. Leone was a member of Holy Spirit Parish and Parish Ladies Guild. Leone enjoyed people whether it was going downtown for coffee or hosting dinner parties at her home. She enjoyed music, flowers, and spending time with her family. Survivors include her children: Rosie Osterhaus and her husband Tom of Indianapolis, IN, Judy Schapman and her husband Tom of Carroll, Ramona Spence of Henderson, NV, Andy Balk III and his wife Christine of Redondo Beach, CA, Mari Balk of Phoenix, AZ, and Bob Balk and his wife Sharon of Ham Lake, MN; 25 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren, and other extended relatives.
Leone was preceded in death by her parents; husband Andy Balk Jr.; son-in-law, Paul Spence; one sister, Agnes Sporrer; 11 brothers: Jacob, Joe, Matt, Paul, Dr. Leo, Bill, John, Martin, Ollie, Adolph, and Clarence Kuker.
