Leone Schaefer, 85 of Carroll, died Thursday, January 12, 2012 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Schott. Mass Servers will be Issack Anderson and Leone’s great-grandchildren: Jake Schaefer and Justin Schaefer. Music will be by Marcy Anderson and the St. Lawrence Choir. Lector for the funeral mass will be Laura Schaefer. Gift Bearers will be Ron and Luann Cue. Eucharistic Ministers will be: Ron and Luann Cue and Iola Hoogestraat. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Leone’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Casket Bearers will be Leone’s grandsons: Nick Schaefer, Jeremy Schaefer, Kenny Schaefer, Scott Schaefer, Corey Wieland, and Justin Weeks. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 p.m. Friday where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service by the St. Lawrence Parish at 5:30 p.m. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church at 9 a.m. Saturday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass.

Born on September 14, 1926 at Soldier, Iowa, Leone was the daughter of Hilmer and Gunda (Nordaker) Berg. She spent her younger years in the Soldier Community and graduated from Soldier High School. On May 22, 1946 Leone married Melvin Schaefer in Omaha, Nebraska. Following their marriage they farmed in the Dunlap and Danbury Communities before moving to Carroll in 1958. Throughout her lifetime Leone was employed at Pauline’s Café, Moore Brothers Grocery, Carroll Café, Paul and Wayne’s Café, Pat’s Casino Café, Carroll Country Store and the Daily Times Herald. She enjoyed playing bingo, sewing, dancing, listening to music, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends. Leone was a member of St. Lawrence Parish and Parish Ladies Guild.
Survivors include her children: Sandy Lawson of Council Bluffs, Mel Schaefer Jr. and his wife Debbie of Omaha, NE, Rick Schaefer and his wife Sue of Carroll, Dan Schaefer and his wife Linda of Carroll, Kathy Schaefer of Carroll, Pat Peters and her husband Don of Carroll, and Linda Weeks and her husband Russ of Manilla; 22 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Iola Berg of San Antonio, TX, Esther Berg of Appleton, WI, Betty Thompson of Wilcox, AZ, Sharon Greer of Dateland, AZ, Ruth (Bob) Wagoner of Conway, AR, Shirley (Raymond) Krajicek of Dunlap, Dorothy (Fred) Bartz of Menomonie, WI, Delores (Ron) Hartwig of Logan, and Jerry Schaefer of Denver, CO.
Leone was preceded in death by her parents; husband Melvin Schaefer in March 2010; her son-in-law, Leonard Wieland; her sisters: Agnes Smith, Vivian Eatherton, Geraldine Cue, and Sharon Henricksen; her brothers: Orvan, Glen, Vernon and Elliot Berg; and her parents-in-law, Cletus and Elizabeth Schaefer.
