Leona Minnehan, age 81, of Carroll, died early Wednesday morning, January 5, 2011 at the Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston, Iowa.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, January 8, 2011 at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Johnson. Lector will be Lisa Wolterman. Gift Bearers will be Leona’s granddaughters: Sarah and Katie Minnehan. Eucharistic Ministers will be Joan Shymanski, and Leon and Florence Oswald. Casket Bearers will be Joe Minnehan, Frank Riesenberg, Joe Riesenberg, Bob Riesenberg, Dave Riesenberg, and Bruce Gerhardt. The St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary will form an honor guard for the funeral mass. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 p.m., Friday, where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m., followed by a Christian Wake Service by Holy Spirit Parish at 7 p.m. The casket will be taken to Holy Spirit Church at 8 a.m., Saturday morning to lie in state until time of the funeral mass. Leona was born on July 15, 1929 at Roselle, Iowa, the daughter of Anton and Margaret (Wiskus) Riesenberg. She spent her younger years in Roselle and attended Holy Angels School. Leona was married to Paul Minnehan at Holy Angels Church in Roselle by Fr. Richard Graf. Following their marriage Paul and Leona made their home in Carroll. She was employed by Kasperbauer Cleaners. Leona also worked out of her home as a seamstress, and enjoyed making craft items and quilts. Leona did volunteer work as a member of the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary, and was active in the Ladies Guild, assisting with funeral lunches. For the past two years she was living at Martina Place Assisted Living in Johnston, Iowa, where she enjoyed being closer to her family, especially her granddaughters. Leona was a member of the Holy Spirit Parish, Parish Ladies Guild, and St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include her son; Joseph Minnehan and his wife Michelle of Des Moines; two grandchildren: Sarah and Katie Minnehan at home; one sister, Lizzie Riesenberg of Spokane, WA; five brothers: Joe (Linda) Riesenberg of Ft. Dodge, Walter Riesenberg of Chesterfield, MO, Louis (Carol) Riesenberg of Moscow, ID, Frank (Ann) Riesenberg of Des Moines, and John (Diane) of Ft. Dodge; her sisters-in-law: Donna Peterson of Carroll, Trena Riesenberg of Jonesbrough, TN, and Mary Catherine (Carold) Pearson of Boone, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Paul in May 1996; a sister, Lucille Riesenberg; and her brothers: Alvin, Lawrence, Wilbur, and Norbert Riesenberg.
