LaVern F. Hoffman, age 73, of Carroll, Iowa, died early Monday, April 21, 2008, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 P.M., Thursday, April 24, 2008, at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father James McCormick. The casket will be taken to the church at 11:30 A.M. Thursday to lie in state until the time of the funeral mass. Lector will be Alan Loew. Gift Bearers will be Erik Hoffman and Calvin Hoffman. Eucharistic Ministers will be Val Hoffman and Alan Loew. Casket Bearers will be Jim Wilson, Jeremy Hoffman, Rebecca Morse, Nathan Hoffman, Mike Brincks, and Larry Hoffman. Burial will be at St. Francis Cemetery in Maple River. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 2:30 P.M. Wednesday. A rosary will be prayed at 3 P.M. Wednesday. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Wednesday by Holy Spirit Parish. Mr. Hoffman was born on June 21, 1934, at Templeton, Iowa, the son of John and Martha (Kennebeck) Hoffman. He grew up in the Templeton community and attended rural school and Sacred Heart School. On May 22, 1956, he was married to Kathleen Loew at St. Francis Church in Maple River. The couple spent most of their married life in the Maple River and Carroll communities. Mr. Hoffman spent most of his working career as a farmer and also worked at several other jobs in Carroll. He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish. He enjoyed western movies and coin collecting. Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Hoffman of Carroll; children, Jeanne Wilson of Ames, Randy Hoffman and his wife Val of Ankeny, Mark Hoffman and his wife Betty of Urbandale, Mary Johnson and her husband John of Madison, Nebr., Marty Hoffman and his wife Marilyn of Fredricksburg, Virginia, Ken Hoffman and his wife Linda of Des Moines, and Chuck Hoffman and his wife Christy of Des Moines; eleven grandchildren; one great grandson; a sister, Marge Hupp of Carroll; and sister-in-law, Ruth Hoffman of Spencer. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Marten Joshua Hoffman; brother, Bernard Hoffman; son-in-law, Michael Morse, Sr.; and brothers-in-law, Andrew Brincks and Dean Hupp.
